In 2025-26, 93% of the clients served through AEF's Regional Mental Health Consortium in San Diego, identified as BIPOC, and 83% were low-income.

These numbers tell us something important:

Mental health equity requires us to intentionally reach communities that face greater barriers to care.

But behind every percentage is a person with their own story, strengths, challenges, hopes and future.

Our goal is to make sure access to mental health support isn't limited by circumstances.

What happens when training meets community need?

Through AEF's Regional Children’s Mental Health Consortium, CSPP PsyD and PhD students gain hands-on clinical experience while providing mental health services to children, youth, and families in under-resourced communities.

Clinical psychology students worked with partner agencies, providing services for clients and families. It’s a powerful two-way investment: supporting the mental health workforce of tomorrow while helping families today.

Adverse Childhood Experiences, or ACEs, can include experiences such as abuse, neglect, exposure to violence, and other circumstances that can undermine a child’s sense of safety and stability.

The Office of the US Surgeon General had issued an Advisory that notes that ACEs and toxic stress can have lasting effects on development and mental health.

In AEF’s 2025–26 Regional Mental Health Consortium program in San Diego, 78% of clients had experienced ACEs.
