Your voice made a difference. After more than 15,000 postcards from San Diegans and hours of public comment, the City's final Fiscal Year 2027 budget restored $1.2M to the Library and protected hours and services in Council Districts 4, 6, 8, and 9.

We're grateful. And we're not finished. The budget still reduces San Diego Public Library hours for most of the City, and San Diegans deserve and have called for a full-time Library department.

We'll keep advocating for 37/7: all 37 branches open seven days a week. Thank you for being in this with us.

Last month, we celebrated the 2025 and 2026 graduates of this incredible free program, including the largest Career Online High School graduating class in the program's 11-year history. San Diego students in these programs graduate at a rate 10% higher than the California state average. This is a direct result of having access to free, flexible, life-changing education.

None of this is possible without YOU. Your donations to Library Foundation SD fund programs like this one, making it free for any adult with a SDPL card to earn their diploma on their own schedule, with materials available online 24/7, laptops to borrow, and Wi-Fi hotspots to keep them connected.

This month, "Kindness Happens Here," the free newspaper founded by journalist Leigh Fenly, celebrates all eight public library systems across San Diego County, from the City and County to independent local libraries.

Library Foundation SD CEO Patrick Stewart had the chance to talk with Leigh about the project at his recent office hours, and we're grateful for the time and care she and her team put into telling these stories.

πŸ“šπŸŽ­ This morning at the City’s FY2027 budget hearing, Library Foundation SD CEO Patrick Stewart made the case plainly: the San Diego Public Library System is the largest provider of free cultural programming in our region. Cuts to Library hours are cuts to the arts, and cuts to the arts are cuts to what our Libraries can offer the whole city.

We have come so far this season, thanks to you. Thank you to every advocate who spoke up for Libraries, rec centers, and the arts, to the Councilmembers working to restore funding, and to the private partners who have helped fill the gaps. This is what we can build together.

Can you show up tomorrow? WE NEED LIBRARY SUPPORTERS to join us in City Council Chambers. We will bring the signs. We need you to fill the room to encourage our City Councilmembers to source additional funding to prevent the loss of hours that you fought to restore last year. The final City budget is now in their hands.

When Library hours are lost, San Diego communities lose access to art and culture programs, youth services, and economic development initiatives.

Join us TOMORROW, Friday, June 5, at 9:00 a.m. to speak up for what you want funded in the final City of San Diego budget.

This is your opportunity to tell your councilmembers that our Libraries must be funded in the final City budget and to let them know how important they are to you and your community.
