Amigos,
God guided Martin Aguilar into our lives 4 years ago.
He and his family (his mom, older sister Mariana, and younger brother Gabriel) had recently moved to Puerto Morelos escaping a really difficult situation. One afternoon, Martin came to the field where we practice hoping to find a soccer team or some people to play soccer with... and he found Puerto Morelos Tortugas practicing flag football. At the time we weren't doing soccer, but he didn't mind, he was up for anything in sport, and there in that moment with an introduction made by sports, started a journey, an opportunity for us to walk alongside of Martin and his family.
Since that day, Martin has trained athletically with Esfuerzo Perfecto, transforming himself into a State champion in track and an all-star selection in American Football. Academically, he has graduated from high school with an 8.9 average, and has put himself in place to be offered athletic scholarships to universities in Mexico. He has developed personally as an example to follow for his peers and the young people in our academic and athletic programs, earning the position of Captain for our Varsity level American football team. He demonstrates a level of discipline in his academic and athletic endeavors that is rare for a young man his age as he is willing to do what others won't in order to get the opportunity to live out his dreams and goals.
Arguably the most impressive bit about Martin is the way he has stepped into the male role of caregiver for children in our En Su Imagen childcare. Males being involved in childcare is a bit of a taboo where we are. Naturally, parents have been a bit hesitant initially when they find out that we have young men involved as guides in our childcare. Martin has been a trailblazer in this way and has done so because of a unique level of empathy and care for children that he demonstrates not only while he is working at En Su Imagen but also while he is at the field training on a daily basis, engaging with the younger Tortugas.
We celebrate Martin and we are thankful for who he is, and for the impact he is having here in Puerto Morelos and the continued impact he will have wherever he goes in the future!
