According to Poway Unified School District’s financial reports, General Fund actual expenditures grew by 31.73% over a 5-year period (2020–21 to 2024–25)—an annual spending increase of over $130 million.

Are Del Norte High School US History II classes going to focus on core historical events or an ideological framework this school year?

In Unit 2 of one US History II course, learning targets centered heavily on government-created "institutional oppression." Combined with Unit 1 ("Roots of American Hate"), these two units accounted for a quarter (25%) of the overall course grade.

School site leadership points out that Poway Unified School District (PUSD) gives teachers broad autonomy and relies on "trusting professional judgment" rather than prescribing a "rigid, day-by-day curriculum.” However, the district’s own formal investigation substantiated that these custom prompts violated neutrality policies. There is an oversight gap here that leadership needs to address.

Parents understand teachers use supplemental material. But that doesn’t give teachers permission to use it to set their own standards. PUSD Community Watch (PCW) remains dedicated to advocating for balanced, standards-aligned instruction across all classrooms.

The Economics of 'Free' School Services...

PUSD Claim (California’s Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative - CYBHI): "Your consent unlocks state funding, keeping these essential services completely free for all students." / "Zero Cost to You."

Question: Is "zero out-of-pocket co-pay" the same as "free?"

State reimbursements come from tax dollars, and private insurance payouts impact policyholder pools, right?

Let's be transparent: there is no such thing as free state money. Taxpayers and rate-payers foot the bill either way. 📄📉

⚠️From Federal Relief Funds to Insurance Billing

Looks like the post-COVID funding cliff has officially hit Poway Unified. The district is rolling out California’s Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI)— asking parents to hand over health insurance information so they can bill insurers for school-based behavioral and mental health programs.

While the district promises zero out-of-pocket costs and says services continue either way, asking parents to sign a Health Information Exchange & Consent Form for school counseling definitely raises questions about data sharing, privacy, and how school-based care is funded moving forward. 🤔

District emails say "thank you for partnering with us to support your child's health." Friendly Reminder: they are your children, not the state's. Read the fine print on those Informed K-12 forms before you sign! 📄🔍

Did you know you can opt your child(ren) out of materials related to sexual orientation and gender identity?

Over the last six years, Poway Unified School District (PUSD) has been hyper-focused on providing materials related to sexual orientation and gender identity, including flags, instructional materials, surveys, and books. This past school year, the Westview High School Theatre Co. produced a musical (The Prom) that included the song "Love Thy Neighbor," which explicitly mocked Christian beliefs.

Following the Supreme Court ruling Mahmoud v. Taylor (June 27, 2025), school districts can no longer disregard parental rights. PUSD updated their annual notification this school year (page 7) in acknowledgment of this, yet they claim, “The District will evaluate each opt-out request and determine whether the request will be granted.”

School districts cannot act as "religious belief police" to judge the theological validity or truth of a family's faith. Therefore, the evaluation mentioned in the notification is likely limited strictly to neutral, administrative criteria (such as verifying identity, completeness of the request form, and the sincerity of the stated religious objection) to process the exemption fairly and consistently.

If you wish to opt your child(ren) out of materials related to sexual orientation and gender identity, you can submit an opt-out letter directly to your student's school office.
