Heliotrope for Hospice

Heliotrope for Hospice As the earth spins and revolves around the sun, the subtle movements of nature mark the passage of time, a powerful symbol of life.

Founded on May 31, 2011, Heliotrope for Hospice is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, public and charitable organization currently dedicated to providing fresh bedside flower arrangements for people in hospice care. "What does our name mean?"

Derived from the Greek words “helio” for sun and “tropos” to turn, “heliotropic” flowers can move, turning or curving (like a sunflower) toward sunlight.

Lovin' this past week, delivering sunflowers and butterflies to people in care with Mission Healthcare Hospice! Thanks to Lori, their amazing Volunteer Coordinator who always says "Yes, absolutely we can receive those flowers and get them to our patients!" Even on short notice, she's always at the ready 💛

Grateful for my Auntie Carol, who sent a generous donation with a lovely Easter card greeting. Always remembering & honoring her sister, Shirley's earthly birthday, Spring is a time to reflect on families and loved ones 🦋

Wishing you blossoms & butterfly love, along with many bright & warm days for your gardens to grow in Minneapolis💖

A late night post to share this week's adventure-
93 sunflower trios delivered to people in hospice care!

Today I remember what would have been my mom's 93 birthday!
so each day I delivered as many sunflowers as I could get my hands on, to reach 93 people thru out San Diego County!

🌻Thankful to Kris at Trader Joe's Hillcrest for special ordering as many "sunnies" as possible- you always come thru for Heliotrope for Hospice
🌻Thankful to the volunteers and care givers at LightBridge Hospice & Palliative Care, Apreva Hospice and Mission Healthcare Hospice, for making sure the sunflowers were delivered safely

🌻AND most humbled & grateful for Taylor & Aaron who donated a generous financial contribution to make this sunflower celebration possible. I've been holding onto this donation for a while, knowing exactly how I would use it... to honor our loved ones who have journeyed before us, celebrating their lives and knowing that they are free, healthy and in the realm of Glory.

Taylor & Aaron, words cannot express how overwhelmed I am by your generosity & kindness.🙏🏼 I hope you celebrate this coming Easter surrounded by beautiful blooms.
Please know, You have touched SO many people~

Love you infinity 💛 💚🤎 💛

Plant love is some of the best love!💚
Thankful for another generous donation from Kris at Trader Joe's- 90+ plants!!

After a bit of "spa" treatment, revived & refreshed- these little ceramic Hearts 🩷❤️(blooming kalanchoes) and Faces 🤓(baby succulents) were on their way to Alex at VITAS Healthcare Hospice on Monday! Always at the ready, he puts out the call to so many amazing volunteers, who distribute the plants across San Diego County in record time !! Grateful for everyone who helps make Heliotrope for Hospice happen- on the roads, thru the traffic... to bring a little plant & flower love to people in hospice care 🥰

What a great way to wrap up February 2026!

Did you know that cut tulips will continue to grow up to 10 inches longer/ taller AFTER they are cut?!?

It's true! There's so much life in the bulb that even after the bloom is cut, nourishment is stored in the stem & continues to feed the bloom for a whole week!

One of my favorite flowers, I'm always amazed by the animation of tulips as they hydrate, grow to the light, petals and stems elongate, curving, draping... long past the time they were cut from the plant 🌱🌷🥰
Check it out, I've finally photo-documented the "before & after" (1 week difference in blooms 😮😉

Looking at the calendar, I can't believe it's February already!
The last two weeks is a blur of so many flowers- like I haven't seen in years! There's a lot of photos in this post... I won't take up too much space describing them- enjoy as you "Bloom Scroll" thru!

Words cannot express my gratitude for Ericka & her team at Hartworks Floral Design. She reached out at the beginning of this New Year, asking if I would be interested in floral donations from several of her corporate events. YES, of course !! So... on 5 separate days I received "gently used" floral centerpieces, vases & buckets of extra blooms.... and my living room became a flower field! 😀💗
.. as donations continued, I gleaned thru the flowers to make so many hand tied bouquets for people in hospice care at LightBridge Hospice & Palliative Care, Mission Healthcare Hospice, Apreva Hospice, and VITAS Healthcare Hospice !!
For the 4th donation, I was thrilled when floral design students from Cuyamaca College Ornamental Horticulture helped deconstruct the last centerpieces into bedside bundles of beauty.

Whew! The time & energy to make Heliotrope for Hospice happen is freely given, dependent upon kindness from so many people.
With gratitude, I'm excited to collaborate with Hartworks Floral Design https://www.instagram.com/hartworksfloral/ in the future, repurposing event flowers, celebrating and honoring this part of life's journey with flower love 💐💗🙏🏼 😊

Happy New Year 2026!
While diving into my resolution to "de-clutter", I took a moment to rest, and went down a bit of a rabbit hole on the website... reading a post from New Year's Day 2019- as true then as it is now.

If you've never hear of The Desiderata, grab a coffee and give it a read. Worth some reflection before you get back into the routine, wondering what the New Year holds for you 💖🙏🏼🌱🌻💫

Happy New Year's Eve 2025!
I hope this finds you safe, warm & surrounded by love!🌻

The roses were so beautiful last week, I decided to continue the theme with 'Brighton' Yellow, 'Deep Purple' and 'Vendela' Ivory rose varieties, with accents of silver dollar eucalyptus, citron geranium & our common Jade succulent cuttings. Each gathering is unique, unexpected~🌱

SO Grateful for Brad Monroe & Therese Botz 🥰
They always remember & honor loved ones, thru Donations to Heliotrope for Hospice. They know the journey of hospice, for everyone who is touched by this care- for dear family & friends,
we celebrate life in all facets 💖
Thank you with all my heart, for providing this last 2025 floral delivery of rose trios ... 40 small gifts of beauty for the travelers 💫

(did you know... The word "hospice" is derived from the Latin 'hospes', which historically referred to places of rest for travelers...)
I love this so much 🥹

A special note of acknowledgement and THANK YOU to all the staff, caregivers, volunteers, CNAs, nurses, doctors, clergy, support at the hospices that I deliver the flowers!
You are The Conduit for the flowers to reach each person in your care : Mission Hospice, Apreva Hospice, VITAS Healthcare Hospice, LightBridge Hospice & Palliative Care ✨
Heliotrope for Hospice would not be possible without YOU !🙏🏼

Winter Solstice is one of my deepest yearnings... I'm not a fan of shorter daylight, so when the 24 hours are split equally into day and night, my soul resonates! 😊 I can SEE, and feel the longer days! Of course, December weather is very kind in San Diego, and ...
Did you know...

🦋Overwintering: Western Monarchs migrate to the California coast (including San Diego) from October to February to overwinter, not Mexico.

🦋Warm Winter Climate: San Diego's mild winters allow them to remain active, unlike Eastern Monarchs.

🦋Nectar & Water: Even in winter, they need to feed, flying from their roosts to find flowers and water on sunny days.

With the short supply / high demand of red roses during December, this week I chose plentiful 'Orange Crush', and a few 'Shimmer' light peach, and a bunch of 'Vendela' mimosa roses... with Butterflies!!!!

So much gratitude to Martha Hollis and Eddie Hollis, for their continued support of Heliotrope for Hospice! Thru their kindness, many people (in hospice care with the amazing care givers and staff at Apreva Hospice) received a gift of fresh roses with a hand painted butterfly accent...

When the end of the year comes, when donations slow down- always, these beautiful friends overwhelm me with their generosity!
You touch my heart. I wish you joy filled, days of sunlight ahead, and many butterflies in your beautiful garden 🦋💫💖✨🧡
