SNAP - Spay Neuter Action Project

SNAP - Spay Neuter Action Project SNAP is a purpose-driven 501(c)(3) organization offering LOW-NO COST spay/ neuter services to our local San Diego community. Join our pack!

The Spay-Neuter Action Project (SNAP) was co-founded in 1990 by a group of women who were volunteering at a local municipal animal shelter. After seeing countless stray animals come and go, these women knew adoptions alone werenโ€™t going to solve the problem โ€” there were simply too many unwanted animals for the number of available homes! To reduce the number of animals euthanized in shelters every

year, they had to reduce the number of homeless animals from coming into the shelter system in the first place. They published a referral guide of affordable spay/neuter providers in San Diego County, to address the problem of pet overpopulation at its source.

That effort eventually led to becoming an affordable spay/neuter provider. SNAP became a nonprofit, 501(c)3 Charitable Organization in 1995 and a registered charity in 1996. Our EIN (Federal Tax Identification Number) is 33-0517862. The SNAP Team of volunteers and medical professionals made it their mission to help reduce pet overpopulation and stop euthanasia in shelters. The original Neuter Scooter mobile surgical bus launched in 2003 to travel directly into lower-income communities to provide affordable spay/neuter services right where they were needed most. The SNAP North Neuter Scooter hit the road in 2019, and the SNAP East Spay Center opened doors in April 2024.
Tangible results have been realized over the years. Through dedication, passion, and strong programming, the SNAP team is proud of our efforts โ€” and the results of over 85,000 animals fixed since 2003!

Won't you join us? Please consider making a donation, volunteering with us, or adopting a pet at your local shelter. And please spay and neuter your animals โ€” it's a good thing!

๐Ÿพ Pet Overpopulation Isn't Just an Animal Welfare Issue. It's a Community Issue. ๐Ÿพ

When people think about pet overpopulation, they often picture crowded shelters filled with dogs and cats.

But the impact goes much deeper.

Pet overpopulation contributes to shelter overcrowding, rescue burnout, animal neglect cases, community cat challenges, public health concerns, and increased costs for local governments and taxpayers. It places enormous strain on animal shelters, rescue organizations, veterinary resources, and the people working every day to help animals in need.

The good news? Prevention works.

In 2025, SNAP helped prevent countless unwanted litters by providing:

โœ… 7,765 spay/neuter surgeries
โœ… 8,544 free vaccines
โœ… 3,546 microchips
โœ… 19,473 clients served
โœ… 288 clinic days throughout San Diego County

Every surgery helps reduce future shelter intake. Every clinic helps keep pets healthy. Every prevention effort strengthens our community.

That's why your vote in the Lazy Acres Market Envirotokens Program matters.

๐Ÿ’™ Envirotokens funding can help SNAP continue providing affordable spay/neuter services, outreach, education, and prevention programs that address the root causes of pet overpopulation before animals end up in shelters or rescues.

๐Ÿฑ A Reminder to Check Your Cat's Mouth ๐Ÿฑ

During a routine pre-surgery exam this weekend, our veterinary team discovered that one of the cats scheduled for a spay/neuter procedure was showing signs of stomatitis. This painful inflammatory condition affects a cat's mouth and gums.

Cats are masters at hiding discomfort, which is why routine veterinary exams are so important. A cat can appear normal while quietly suffering from significant dental pain.

Signs of stomatitis may include:
๐Ÿ”น Bad breath
๐Ÿ”น Red or inflamed gums
๐Ÿ”น Drooling
๐Ÿ”น Difficulty eating
๐Ÿ”น Weight loss
๐Ÿ”น Pawing at the mouth
๐Ÿ”น Reduced grooming

Take a moment to check your cat's mouth. Healthy gums should be pink, not bright red, swollen, or bleeding.

Because our pets can't tell us when something hurts, regular veterinary care and routine wellness checks can make all the difference. โค๏ธ๐Ÿพ

๐Ÿพ Did you know a microchip is one of the simplest and most important ways to help protect your pet?

Collars and tags are important, but they can fall off or become hard to read. A microchip gives your pet a permanent form of ID that can help bring them home if they ever get lost.

But hereโ€™s the big reminder:

A microchip only works if your contact information is up to date.

This June, make โ€œCheck Your Petโ€™s Microchip Infoโ€ part of your yearly routine.

Take a few minutes to:

โœ” Verify your phone number and address
โœ” Update emergency contacts
โœ” Confirm the microchip is registered
โœ” Make sure your petโ€™s profile is current

Moved recently? Got a new phone number? Changed your email? Those small changes can make a big difference if your pet ever goes missing.

And remember, pets should still wear collars with current ID tags when possible. A visible phone number is often the fastest way for someone nearby to reach you.

Not sure if your pet is microchipped or if the info is current? Ask your veterinarian or local shelter to scan and verify it.

A few minutes today could help bring your pet home someday. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ

Shared story from SNAP supporter Alejandra . ๐Ÿฅฐ

โ€œBeing in Nepal and taking on this incredible physical challenge has been an unforgettable experience. Through the long days of trekking, the high altitude, and the journey to Everest Base Camp, one thing that never left me was my commitment to the animals.
I was proud to carry SNAP with me all the way to Everest Base Camp, where we spent two nights at 5,364 meters (17,598 feet) before the marathon. Yesterday, May 29, I successfully completed the Everest Base Camp Marathon, carrying SNAPโ€™s mission with me every step of the way.
I ran in honor of all the dogs, cats, and animals everywhere who cannot speak for themselves but whose lives matter just as much.
Thank you, SNAP, for the incredible work you do every day to help animals and the people who love them. It was an honor to represent your mission on one of the most challenging journeys of my life.
For the animals. Always. โค๏ธ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ”๏ธโ€

๐Ÿพ So. Many. Kittens. ๐Ÿพ

All of these kittens were seen during just ONE clinic.

They're adorable, but they also tell an important story.

Every kitten you see here represents why spay and neuter matters. Shelters and rescues across San Diego County are overwhelmed during kitten season, and many of these litters could have been prevented through early spay/neuter.

At SNAP, we're working every day to provide affordable access to spay/neuter services, outreach, education, and prevention programs that help stop unwanted litters before they start.

That's why your vote matters.

The Lazy Acres Market Envirotokens Program will help us fund the prevention work that keeps more kittens from entering already overcrowded shelters and rescues.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Vote daily. Ends June 2!: https://www.lazyacres.com/community/envirotokens-vote-encinitas

It takes less than a minute, but your vote helps us reach more pets, support more families, and prevent more unwanted litters.

Because as cute as these kittens are, the goal is fewer animals entering shelters and more pets staying healthy and cared for in our community.

Thank you for helping us ! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ
