BEING SUPPORTIVE IS HEART WORK—For Maleny Bustos Cardenas, Townspeople Resident Services Coordinator, Heart Work looks like regularly and reliably engaging and supporting Townspeople clients.

From facilitating Loteria with residents, to conducting wellness checks on elderly clients, to hosting guest speakers who provide valuable information on wellness, health, and other resources, to keeping information boards refreshed and up-to-date with a monthly calendar, upcoming activities, flyers, and important resources—SHOWING UP with intention and care for the Townspeople community is what Heart Work is all about.

As part of the Permanent Supportive Housing team, Maleny and her teammates also work together to pick up food from the Vons Rescue program and the Food Bank to provide additional food resources to our residents.

The 2025 Housing Innovation Pilot, a partnership with the Regional Task Force on Homelessness (RTFHSD) and the City of Vista, CA City Hall (Vista), was created to address a simple reality: too many people are priced out of housing. Shared housing offered a different path. By matching housemates and sharing costs, participants accessed homes that would otherwise be out of reach while gaining stability, safety, and connection.

As the Housing Innovation Pilot came to a close in December 2025, Townspeople remained focused on participants’ housing stability. With support from Funders Together to End Homelessness San Diego, 135 households remained connected to the resources needed to stay housed.

We are grateful to RTFHSD and Vista for helping launch and validate this model, as well as the 33 community organizations that participated as referral partners!

Behind Townspeople's impact are the people who make housing happen every day. So, we've checked in with the team to share why they're committed to showing up for the individuals, families, and communities we serve.

"After 30 years in social work, I've learned that sometimes the smallest act of kindness can make the biggest difference," shares Isabel Mora, Townspeople's Permanent Supportive Housing Team Manager. "What inspires me is knowing that I may be just one person, but to someone who needs support, I can be the person who helps them believe in themselves again."

For Isabel, the Townspeople moments that continue to stay with her are seeing the incredible impact that stable housing and supportive services can have on a client's health and overall well-being.

"Seeing that transformation reminds me that housing is more than just a roof over someone's head-it can be the beginning of a healthier and more stable life," she says. "Being able to witness those changes in my clients is one of the most rewarding parts of the work I do with Townspeople."
