We were proud to support Women 4 Women at their 2nd Annual Domestic Violence Awareness Walk. While domestic violence does not discriminate based on race, gender, class, ability, etc., Oshun’s Garden is adamant about addressing the ways that dating and domestic violence impact women in the Black community. For us, DV prevention requires us to acknowledge the ways in which our community has normalized abusive behaviors and to challenge the sexist and misogynistic beliefs that lead to violence. It’s on all of us, every month of every year.

Today begins early voting in Maryland, and today and everyday, our eyes are set on a more liberated future for Black women and girls. To that end, we have taken the pledge of Black Feminist Future to VOTE LIKE A BLACK FEMINIST down the ballot.

Our priority has always been to improve the material conditions of Black women and girls. From equitable healthcare and livable wages to decriminalization and pathways to citizenship, the significance of this moment is not lost on us. While we cannot tell you who to vote for, we did highlight some of the issues that are important to us and our community. These can also be found in the BFF Vote Like A Black Feminist Voter Guide.

There’s much to be done, so in the words of our siblings in the work: “WHAT THAT VOTE DO?”

We are grateful for Tidal Roots Garden Center for allowing us to host October’s sista circle in their space and for Whitney Brewington for always being willing to teach and lend her energy. 💛

Happy Mother’s Day to the mamas (birth mamas, non-birth mamas, adoptive mamas, bonus mamas, expectant mamas, the mamas we’ve lost, and the mamas with an angel baby)!

Today and everyday we express our love and gratitude to the ones who guide us, love us on our worst day, and make life more beautiful simply by being in it.

We couldn’t do it without you. Wishing you a beautiful day of joy and appreciation. 💛

“When Black women gather, there is a healing. There is a knowing. There is a power that cannot be denied.”

Our youngest vendor on Saturday was just 9 years old while our oldest attendee was 82. We’re talking generations of magic, wisdom, and being that girl! The energy in the room is always undeniable and we are over the moon with pride to be able to facilitate such an experience. 💛💛💛

Today and everyday we stand in support of survivors of sexual violence. If you’re wearing denim today, let us see! 💛💛

Image text: Denim Day is a global sexual violence prevention campaign held on the last Wednesday in April. It started from a 1998 Italian Supreme Court ruling that overturned a r**e conviction because the victim “wore tight jeans”, implying consent. Following the reversal, members of the Italian Parliament wore denim jeans in protest. Today, participants wear denim to challenge victim-blaming and other problematic attitudes while standing in solidarity with sexual violence survivors. Post a picture of yourself wearing denim and tag us!

As our flagship event continues to reach beyond Maryland, it speaks to the reality that issues facing Black women have no geographical boundaries and that the joy and warmth that’s created when we come together is truly something special.

As comes to an end, we’d like to highlight the ones who show up for OG and for the communities that we serve.

Earlier this month, two of our youngest volunteers packed and delivered Easter treat bags for the children at the Village of Hope (with a little guidance and chauffeur from their mamas 😉). Village of Hope offers transitional housing and other support to at-risk women and children.

This month also marked our very first volunteer orientation. We are incredibly grateful to see an increase in volunteer interest and extend many thanks to all who assisted during Black Maternal Health Week.
