This week's bacteria data are in! 1 of our 26 sites had an elevated bacteria level above the EPA's safe swimming threshold (Douglas Nicholas Park at 135MPN/100mL). Remember you can view our monthly data at: https://www.wicomicoenvironment.org/wicomico-environment-news/river-updates
Thank you to our dedicated volunteers and community partners who make this monitoring possible!

The laboratory that analyzes our Creekwatchers samples for bacteria levels follows EPA’s standard protocols to determine if bacteria (enterococci) levels are safe for swimming. The threshold to determine that the sample meets acceptable swimming levels is 104 most probable number (MPN)/100 mL. While none of the Creekwatchers sample locations are public swimming sites, we publish these data when samples exceed the threshold to keep the public informed. Enterococci levels are an EPA-recommended indicator for risks to human health, but ultimately, each person is responsible for making the decision to swim in the Wicomico River watershed.

Join Youth Environmental Action students on Sunday, June 7 at 3:00PM for their Pollinator Meadow Celebration. During this informal event, participants will learn how the meadow was created, discover ways to establish similar pollinator-friendly spaces at home or at local businesses, and celebrate the dedication and leadership these students have shown throughout the project.

This event will take place 909 S Schumaker Dr -- the site of the forthcoming Wicomico Public Library! All are welcome.

Youth Environmental Action is a fiscally-sponsored program of WET.

What started as a single New Year’s Day cleanup by four friends has grown into a county-wide movement making a real difference right here in Wicomico County.

Since January 2024, Wicomico Clean has mobilized hundreds of volunteers, hosted more than 50 cleanup events, and removed an estimated 20 tons of litter from our roadsides, parks, and waterways.

In our latest blog post, we’re highlighting the inspiring leadership of Mark Engberg and Bruce Robson, the power of community action, and the partnerships helping create long-term solutions for a cleaner, healthier place to call home.
