Did you know? Very few Standardbreds naturally pace under saddle. Genetics give them a tendency to pace but most trot when left to their own devices. They must be trained to pace with their legs held together wih hobbles, a device that makes the legs on the same side move backwards and forward at the same time. Pacers are easier to train to race and keep from breaking stride because of these hobbles.
The pace, in fact, can be comfortable to ride! Did you know that there is Standardbred blood in Saddlebreds and Tennessee Walkers?
