In Honor of K9 Chief | Rest Easy, Good Boy

The Gaston County Sheriff’s Office mourns the loss of retired K9 Chief, a 10-year-old German Shepherd who recently passed away following health-related issues. Chief joined the Sheriff’s Office in 2019 as an Explosive Detection K9 and served alongside his handler and partner, Deputy Chuck Costner.

Much of Chief’s work happened quietly, before the public arrived and often without anyone knowing he had been there. He conducted bomb sweeps at schools, parades, community gatherings and other large events throughout Gaston County. He also helped protect visitors at Charlotte Motor Speedway and Carolina Panthers stadium events.

Chief’s service extended beyond explosive detection. He helped search for missing children and assisted officers searching for suspects. Whatever the assignment, Chief went where his partner needed him and performed his duty faithfully.

Chief retired in 2025 and spent his remaining time at home with Chuck, the partner who had stood beside him throughout his career. Chief was a protector, a partner and a member of our Sheriff’s Office family. We are grateful for his years of service, and we extend our condolences to Chuck, the K9 Unit and everyone who knew and loved him. His watch has ended, but his service will not be forgotten.

Rest easy, Chief. You were a good boy.

1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣arrests club!

K-9 Echo celebrated his 100th career arrest recently. Echo joined ALE in November 2025 and is trained in narcotics detection, article searches for recovering critical evidence like weapons or discarded tools. Beyond detection, he also specializes in tracking and trailing, using his advanced scent capabilities to locate missing people or tracking down fleeing suspects.

To date, K-9 Echo has helped make 118 arrests and seized over 5 pounds of illicit drugs. Talk about a good boy!

We are incredibly proud of North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Ashlee Cowan and K9 Vegas!

Ashlee spent several years serving the citizens of Martin County as both a School Resource Officer and Investigator with the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. During her time with our office, she demonstrated professionalism, dedication and a genuine commitment to serving others.

It is always rewarding to see someone who was part of our Sheriff’s Office family continue to grow professionally and accomplish great things in their law enforcement career.

Special Agent Cowan, congratulations on your continued success! We are proud of you, proud of the work you are doing and thankful for the years you dedicated to serving the citizens of Martin County.

Troutman Police Department’s K9 Scar has received a donation of body armor

Troutman Police Department, NC - K9 Scar has received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Scar’s vest was sponsored by the Survival Armor Incentive Program and embroidered with the sentiment “Gifted by Vested Interest in K9s and Survival Armor”.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom-fitted, and National Institute of Justice (NIJ) certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 6,631 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount, while a single donation of $1,050 will sponsor one vest. Each vest has a value of $1800.00, weighs an average of 4-5 lbs., and comes with a five-year warranty. For more information or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please call (508) 824-6978.
