SPOTLIGHT on a BHF FOSTER FAMILY!
Meet the Sherberts! They have fostered over 70 kids since opening their home in 2017. Here's what they have to say about it:
👉🏽What is a struggle most people wouldn’t know about foster parents?
The emotional whiplash of loving kids like they’re yours while knowing you might have to say goodbye at any time. It’s joy and heartbreak sometimes in the same breath.
And on a very practical level… keeping bedding, towels, and somehow even spoons in the house. (Seriously. Where do they go?! We believe there’s a spoon heaven somewhere.)
👉🏽What does success in fostering look like to you?
Success isn’t about keeping a child forever. It’s when a child feels safe, seen, and deeply loved while they’re with us.
It’s when healing starts — for kids and families — and when a child leaves knowing: “I’m still loved, and I still have people.”
And honestly, success is knowing God held all of it when we couldn’t.
👉🏽What surprised you most about yourself through fostering?
That we are more broken than we ever realized… and somehow still being used by God anyway. Also that God gives strength we didn’t know we had — not because we’re strong, but because He is.
👉🏽What is something that someone has done for you that has helped you or encouraged you on your journey?
The church. Always the church.
Meals, prayers, showing up when we were exhausted, and reminding us we’re not doing this alone. And going to RE (a conference) and meeting other foster families who get it — that alone felt like God saying, “See? You’re not crazy. You’re not alone.”
👉🏽What would you say to someone considering becoming a foster family?
Honestly? Pray about it. Then hold on tight. It will stretch you, break you, rebuild you, and absolutely humble you. But God shows up in it in ways you cannot imagine.
So don’t go because you feel ready — go because God is big enough to carry what you can’t.
