North Central Kansas Pride is proud to be the leader of the “Safe Space” campaign in the community. This community-wide campaign designed to make sure the LGBTQ+ members of the community are safe. Businesses around the community have a small sticker on their door(s) designating them as a safe space for all. This simple sign shows the members of the LGBTQ+ community that they are welcome and seen.
We are working to make sure the businesses know what and how to handle situations involving our community. Our goal is to make as many places as we can aware and safe for everyone. Commitment to the Community
At the start of 2023, North Central Kansas Pride celebrated 5 years of Pride in Salina. This initiative designates businesses around Salina that are SAFE SPACES for people of the LGBTQ+ community. These businesses have a small sticker on the entrance(s) signaling to the community that members of the LGBTQ+ community are safe from all hate and discrimination. We want each member of the LGBTQ+ community to know they are valued and welcomed. We also strive to work with our community physicians and counselors to make sure our community stays safe. We are proud that our local physicians provide Gender Affirming Care locally to those transitioning over a certain age. In addition, we also work closely with the USD #305 school district to ensure students are treated equitably. We are proud to be a voice for those that are marginalized or questioning. PrideFest
PrideFest is our annual celebration of diversity and inclusion. It is also remembering the riots at Stonewall in 1969. We remember the struggles for acceptance, inclusion, and equality. PrideFest is our chance to celebrate those struggles and to celebrate being ourselves. Instead of the same format, our festival is different in that we bring in different entertainment acts as well as unique vendors. Over the past years, our festival brings people from across the state to Salina. These people often return year after year. Vendors also play an important part of our investment. Each vendor has local ties and is invested in helping NCKP make PrideFest successful every year. The vendors grow from year to year as well. This is exciting because our vendors help keep it local and will invest in local businesses. Finally, we encourage and welcome informational booths. The Saline County Health Department and Positive Directions both provide information about HIV testing and treatment which is important to our community. Investing in us is an investment to the community. We have a variety of levels for investors to ensure our commitment to the community continues to thrive and bring in more opportunities for revenue. Into The Future
As we move forward in the community, we are eager to develop a permanent space as a community center for youth, parents and a local PFLAG chapter. This space will be available for youth to explore the art of drag, performing, and developing their “look” with the help of drag performers including tips on their makeup and performing. This community center will also be a space where parents can meet with other parents and get support from having open conversations about the LGBTQ+ community.
