🏀🌻 The Spirit of Kansas: Resilience in Action

Since our founding, the Kansas Civic Network has worked to highlight, uplift, and champion rural Kansas. Yet at our core, we are dedicated to celebrating the spirit of the entire Sunflower State-the resilience, determination, and sense of community that unite Kansans from every corner of our state.

That is why the story of the Turner High Lady Bears in Kansas City, Kansas, resonates so deeply.

When faced with the challenge of not having enough players to field a full roster, the Lady Bears could have let adversity define them. Instead, they chose to build something stronger: trust, connection, and a culture of belonging. Through teamwork, perseverance, and a commitment to one another, they transformed a struggling program into a powerful example of what can happen when people refuse to give up on their teammates, their goals, or their community.

Their story, now being shared through a partnership between and , is more than a basketball story. It is a Kansas story.

Kansas' state motto, "Ad Astra per Aspera" : "To the Stars Through Difficulties," is not just a phrase etched into our history. It is a principle lived every day by Kansans. From Kansas City to Coffeyville, from Plains to Concordia, from Emporia to Atchison, communities across our state demonstrate what it means to persevere through challenges, support one another, and continue reaching for something greater.

The Turner High Lady Bears remind us that resilience is not measured by the obstacles we face, but by the courage, character, and determination we bring to overcoming them. Their journey reflects the very best of Kansas and serves as a reminder that when people come together around a shared purpose, extraordinary things are possible.

At the Kansas Civic Network, we are proud to celebrate stories like theirs. Stories that inspire us to build stronger communities, invest in one another, and carry forward the enduring spirit of the Sunflower State.

Today, on the anniversary of D-Day, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and determination of the Allied forces who landed on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944.

We also recognize Kansan Dwight D. Eisenhower, whose leadership as Supreme Allied Commander helped guide one of the most significant military operations in history.

Raised in Abilene, Kansas, Eisenhower's commitment to service, leadership, and duty continues to inspire generations.

Before the invasion, Eisenhower delivered these words to Allied troops:

"You are about to embark on the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you..."

As we reflect on this historic day, we remember those who gave their lives in defense of freedom and the enduring values they fought to protect.

A bipartisan rural policy commission highlighted in The Hill by former U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp (Democrat, North Dakota) and former Governor Chris Sununu (Republican, New Hampshire) is already traveling the country, listening directly to rural communities as the nation reflects on its next 250 years.

Rural America has the people, ideas, and resilience—but too often the pathways to turn local energy into lasting impact are missing.

At the Kansas Civic Network, we exist to help build those pathways. We connect people, communities, and ideas across Kansas so civic energy doesn’t stay isolated-it moves, grows, and turns into action. We’ve heard it for years: people want to engage deeply in their communities, but the wiring isn’t always there. The energy is there. The connection isn’t.

Show up locally. Plug in where you are. Help turn civic energy into real change.

Big update for rural Kansas 🎉

KDHE is investing $79.1M through the Kansas Rural Health Transformation Program, supporting 39 organizations across the state to strengthen rural health care access and infrastructure.
This means:

• Keeping rural hospitals and clinics open and stable
• Expanding access to preventive and everyday care
• Strengthening the rural health care workforce
• Supporting more innovative, modern care delivery

Across Kansas, this investment has one clear focus: making sure where you live doesn’t determine the care you get.

Rural health isn’t a talking point—it’s being built.

At the Kansas Civic Network, we’re always focused on where community comes together and shows up in meaningful ways and this year, that energy is on full display in Wichita at the nation’s largest high school track meet, happening May 29–30.

From small rural towns to larger metro schools, student-athletes across Kansas are stepping onto one of the biggest stages in high school athletics. It’s speed, grit, and pride all in one place where every lane tells a story and every finish line means more than just a time on the clock.

Whether you’re in the stands or following along, this is one of those moments where Kansas shows out.

Freedom has never been free. 🇺🇸

Today, we honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice shaped the freedoms we enjoy today and their courage will never be forgotten.

This Memorial Day, we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice and stand with the families, loved ones, and communities who carry their legacy forward every day.

At the Kansas Civic Network, we are grateful for their service and inspired to continue building stronger communities through compassion, civic engagement, and public service.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

At the Kansas Civic Network, we’re recognizing World Bee Day and the essential role pollinators play in sustaining life across Kansas.

The hive reflects rural Kansas in a simple truth: strength comes from interdependence. Every bee has a role, and every role matters much like our farms, towns, and local producers that keep communities thriving across the state.

Honeybees directly support Kansas agriculture, helping pollinate crops that feed families and fuel rural economies. But they don’t work alone. Native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators depend on the same prairies, fields, and habitats that require care and stewardship.

Protecting pollinators means protecting rural Kansas itself—through conservation practices, native planting, and everyday choices that strengthen both our land and our communities.

In the hive and in Kansas, community is the system that sustains everything.
