State League leadership released the following statement on SB244:

The League of Women Voters of Kansas is appalled by the state’s decision revoking the driver’s licenses of our transgender neighbors. The League stands against all forms of discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ community, especially discrimination
created by our own state.

In Kansas, a driver’s license is the most common form of identification used to register to vote and cast a ballot. By revoking all our transgender voters’ driver's licenses, the state has discriminated against a specific community, created confusion, and added unnecessary barriers to civic participation.

The League believes every eligible voter deserves equal access to the ballot and the freedom to participate safely in public life. Policies that discriminate and make it harder for people to maintain valid identification undermine that principle.

The League of Women Voters of Kansas will continue to advocate for policies that protect equal access to identification and ensure every Kansan can participate fully in our democracy.
