One of the most important things you can do for your pet—and for animals throughout our community—is to have your pets spayed or neutered. ❤️
Every unplanned litter adds more puppies and kittens to a community where shelters and rescues are already working hard to find homes for animals in need.
Spaying and neutering helps:

❤️🐱 THE KITTEN WHO DIDN’T COME HOME WITH US
A couple of weeks ago, the Humane Society of Washington County transported a group of community cats to Alley Cat Advocates for TNR.
At the end of the day, we brought the cats home.
Except for one.
During the veterinary examination, it quickly became apparent that one little kitten wasn't doing well.
The kitten was underweight, dehydrated and suffering from diarrhea. Both eyes had conjunctivitis and discharge, and there was mucus coming from both nostrils. The kitten’s abdomen was mildly distended as well.
Instead of sending the kitten back to the colony, the veterinary team kept the little one for treatment.
And they went to work. ❤️
The kitten received subcutaneous fluids for dehydration, antibiotics and medication for the eye infection, flea treatment and dewormer. The kitten also received the FVRCP and rabies vaccines and was neutered and ear-tipped as part of TNR.
Over the following days, there were more things to watch.
The kitten developed swelling under the jaw that required additional treatment. Thankfully, the medical notes began showing exactly the kind of progress everyone hoped to see:
🐾 Hydration improved.
🐾 The swelling greatly improved.
🐾 The kitten was eating well at nearly every feeding.
🐾 Bright and responsive.
And finally, after nearly two weeks of treatment and observation, the words we had been waiting for appeared in the medical record:
❤️ “OK to return to colony.” ❤️
Today, this little kitten was medically cleared to come home.
This is one of the reasons we believe so strongly in Trap-Neuter-Return.
This kitten went in for a spay/neuter appointment. But that appointment also put a sick, dehydrated little cat in front of veterinary professionals who recognized that something was wrong and provided the care it needed.
For community cats, that opportunity can make an enormous difference.
We are incredibly grateful to Alley Cat Advocates and their veterinary team for not simply treating this kitten as another TNR surgery. They kept the kitten, treated the illnesses, monitored the recovery, and didn't send the little one home until they were satisfied it was ready.
Two weeks ago, we left with an empty spot in one of our carriers.
Today, we got to fill it again. 🐱❤️

🐾 TNR UPDATE: 14 MORE CATS FIXED! 🐾
It’s been a busy couple of weeks for the Humane Society of Washington County’s TNR program!
With the help of our dedicated feeders, trappers, and transporters, we’ve spayed or neutered 14 more community cats. ❤️🐱
When we say we are taking cats for TNR, it can sound pretty simple: trap the cat, get it spayed or neutered, and return it home.
But the veterinary notes from some of this week’s cats show that TNR is about more than preventing kittens.
Several cats were found to have live fleas during their examinations.
One cat had discharge from both eyes and was treated with erythromycin.
Another needed a closer examination because the veterinarian suspected a nasopharyngeal polyp. No polyp was found, but a large piece of mucus was removed from the cat’s nasopharynx.
And many of these cats are little! Several weighed only around 3 to 4 pounds.
For most, thankfully, the best words on their medical records were:
❤️ “Routine Surgery. No additional treatment recommended.”
That's exactly what we want to hear.
TNR—Trap-Neuter-Return—prevents litter after litter of kittens from being born outdoors, but it also gets community cats in front of veterinary professionals who can identify medical concerns that might otherwise go unnoticed.
And getting them there takes a team.
❤️ Feeders watch over the colonies.
❤️ Trappers safely get the cats into traps.
❤️ Transporters get them to and from their appointments.
❤️ Our veterinary partners provide their medical care.
❤️ Our donors help pay for it.
And we're not finished. There are already more community cats waiting for their turn.

As summer begins to wind down, now is a great time to start thinking ahead about the feral and community cats in our neighborhoods. 🐾🍂

Cold weather can be especially challenging for outdoor cats, but a little preparation now can make a huge difference later. Consider setting up insulated, weatherproof shelters in safe locations, checking existing shelters for damage, and making sure feeding stations are protected from rain, wind, and snow.

Straw is a great choice for bedding because it helps repel moisture and keeps cats warm—avoid blankets and towels, which can become damp and cold. It’s also a good time to make sure cats in your colony are spayed or neutered and to identify any kittens or cats who may need additional help before winter arrives.

A little work at the end of summer can mean a warmer, safer winter for the community cats who depend on us. Thank you to all of our hero’s who take the time to help the house less animals in their areas.❤️🐈
