Our beautiful tigress Sayuri was rushed into emergency surgery yesterday for a pyometra. For those unfamiliar, a pyometra is a serious bacterial infection of the uterus which causes it to fill with pus. This potentially life-threatening condition can occur in any unspayed female dog or cat, including big cats.
Our dedicated care team noticed the signs immediately because we had already dealt with this emergency with another tigress, Sitarra.
Our wonderful vet, Dr Guzman arrived on site. We sedated and loaded Sayuri for transport, and rushed her to Ecovets where a surgery team was ready to prep her. Surgeons Dr Darrow and Dr Seger performed the emergency spay and Sayuri did well throughout the procedure.
She is still recovering well today and is eating and taking meds, though she is still wobbly and sleepy. The first 48-72 hours are quite critical and she isn't out of the woods for 2 weeks post op.
Please keep Sayuri in your thoughts. This poor girl has been through a lot this year with her terminal cancer diagnosis, but she's been acting so happy and playful and is still so full of life, we hate that this had to plague her as well. We want to continue to spoil her for many years to come!
