The St. Augustine Wild Reserve is a non-profit corporation created as a rescue center for unwanted exotic animals. Many individuals obtain an exotic pet, only to realize that the animal's wild nature doesn't fit into their life (or their household) as they expected. This is where

we come in. The Reserve will take in unwanted exotic animals as an alternative to euthanasia. Some of the Reserve’s animals came from abusive homes. Many of our animals were confiscated by wildlife agencies from individuals who held these animals without proper state permits, or who starved their animals, maintaining them in inferior conditions. The Founder of the Reserve, Deborah Warrick-Rossi, has worked with exotic animals all of her life, having received extensive training at the Los Angeles Zoo. She has received her AA Degree, and B.S. Degree in Holistic Nutrition to better care for the animals’ nutritional needs. She earned her B.S. Degree in Biology in 2011, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Deborah earned her M.S. Degree in Veterinary Forensic Science in 2017. Deborah Warrick-Rossi married Tony Rossi Oct. 10, 2021.

Venus is smart enough to spend the hottest part of the day mostly submerged. Check out those massive whiskers! Tiger and lion whiskers, also known as vibrissae, can reach up to five inches. It's always a real treat to find one on the ground while tending the habitats.

Today is international wolf day! Working with wolves you get to experience how impressive the unaltered version of canines can be.

They have many incredible qualities in nature's pure form. From built in peripheral thermo-regulation so their feet don't freeze, to antiseptic properties in their saliva that help wounds to heal faster. They even have "perfect tracking" which means their gait is exactly aligned, greatly reducing risk of conditions like hip dysplasia.

Many wolves also exhibit a high degree of loyalty and affection. Wolves might be more cautious around new people than a domesticated dog would be, but once they accept you as a part of their pack they show a very deep level of trust. It's a humbling experience and a true privilege to spend time with Canis lupus!

It's World Lion Day! These cats really are some of the most photogenic animals you could ask for.
