Thank you to the legislators who took time to meet with MSCA members today and listen to the needs of Minnesota students. We are grateful for your partnership and your commitment to strong schools.

We shared why Minnesota’s student-to-counselor ratio (currently 539:1 and ranking 48th in the nation) must improve. We highlighted the importance of protecting and properly implementing Student Support Personnel Aid so it grows mental health teams rather than backfills budgets, and the need to maintain funding for the Workforce Pathway Grant to strengthen and diversify the pipeline of licensed support staff. We desire a clear state-level framework that allows school counselors to focus on academic, social-emotional, and career development…not duties outside our professional scope.

Investing in school counselors improves attendance, achievement, graduation rates, and school safety. Thank you for working with us to ensure every Minnesota student has access to the support they deserve. 💙 Education Minnesota

This morning, school counselors Marissa McClure and Anna Miller spoke powerfully about the role school counselors have played in supporting families through recent community-wide crisis. They spoke following Senator Pha and Representative Kaela Berg who are sponsoring a bill to strengthen the presence of school counselors in all Minnesota schools and further define our role in direct student support.
