We are so excited to welcome Sam Monaco as DocSong’s new Executive Director!

Sam first connected with DocSong through performances featuring stories from New Mainers, work that reflects the heart of what we do: collaboration, storytelling, and music that bridges communities.

A lifelong musician who grew up in Portland, Sam brings a deep commitment to access, inclusivity, and strengthening Maine’s creative community. We’re thrilled to have him leading this next chapter- building on our existing programs while growing deeper roots in Maine.

Shout out to ! We’re so glad you’re here! 🎉

Drumroll please! 🥁 With the month of May coming to a close, we’re gifted a beautiful new “roots” themed Music in Conversation song.

“Empty Container, Two Step Movement” is one of those songs that sticks with you, and for good reason.

Jack Haskell, alongside teaching artist, Alex Millan, created something so deeply honest here that it’s impossible to ignore. Their haunting harmonies, combined with lyrics like:

“American Dream, home alone / over and over again / in a basement obsessively / prescribed the right way to be”

have a way of settling in your bones. The song wrestles with identity, expectation, and isolation, and the quiet pressure to become someone else’s version of yourself. In a world where we’re constantly searching for a stronger sense of self, Jack and Alex remind us to tell the truth — the good, the bad and the ugly.

Stories like this one tend to live juuust underneath the surface. What truths are you still learning to tell? 🔮💌🎶

After launching in 2025 with our first theme, extend , Music in Conversation returns with a new year and a new theme - roots!

Please join us in warmly welcoming Hazel Delehey, our new Program Director!

Hazel, a Maine-based singer-songwriter, recently graduated from Bates College in Maine, where she received her Bachelor's degree in English and Educational Studies. Hazel interned with Maine Authors Publishing, where she helped plan the Maine Authors Book Festival during the summer.

While new to this role, Hazel is not new to DocSong's work or our Mission; she has studied documentary songwriting with DocSong founder, Malcolm Brooks, and has been writing documentary songs for over a decade. She has also led teaching artist training as a facilitator.

At DocSong, Hazel will oversee the launch of the Fellowship Program, support Teaching Artist Training, coordinate Music in Conversation, and our annual concert. Additionally, Hazel will work to build internal systems and documentation to sustain our organization.

Hazel's first day is tomorrow, February 4th, and we can't wait! We look forward to working with you, Hazel!

A song for the returning light of the solstice.

“Pocket of Peace” reminds us what we can create when we take care of each other.

This season may you find your own pocket of peace. And may you know the quiet joy that comes from holding and being held by the people you love.

From all of us at DocSong, wishing you peace and joy today and every day.

Stay tuned in 2026 for more songs from our Music in Conversation project!
