We’re looking at summer’s end and the start of the new school year. Who doesn’t gleefully anticipate the beginning of something new? Or the opportunity to begin again? Each year kids get to know their new teacher and regroup with classmates they missed during July and August. All of us at Leaps of Imagination wish children an exciting first day! We’ll greet fourth graders who made art with us as third graders at Wheeler Bay Wildlife Sanctuary on 10/2. That is day one for the Leaps’ team. Our Big Idea for 2026-2027 is “We Know No Boundaries!” Look for our posts in the month to come!

We are all smiles and delighted to share the news of Maine Arts Commission’s CREATIVE COMMUNITIES’ GRANT to Leaps of Imagination. The project, “Art as a Portal to Connected Thinking: Creative Partnerships Across Grade Levels,” kicks off this fall with explorers from fourth grade and kindergarten in Rockland. Kids will be “out in the field” on South School’s 40+ acres and at Wheeler Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, making art, driven by their passion for nature. Thank you, MAC, for empowering children as artists and deep thinkers.

Collecting at Wheeler Bay Wildlife Sanctuary in Spruce Head, Maine. Spring 2026! Who doesn’t love to find gems in nature? Kindergartners from Wiscasset Elementary School checked out everything from wildflowers to stones, filling their glass jars with memories.

We hope you are all getting out there and noticing the wonders of nature. Kids appreciate the tiniest of gems. There’s so much we can learn from children. Check out this kindergartner from Wiscasset Elementary School collecting beauty in a glass jar at Wheeler Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.

Exploring could not have been more exciting for Wiscasset’s 5-6 year olds at Wheeler Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. Their visit opened their eyes to birds of all kinds, rocks standing upright that one kindergartner identified as Stonehenge, and a giant beaver lodge. Leaps of Imagination’s artists bring kids of all ages to Spruce Head to discover nature anew. Plans are in the works for fall …..

Art Stories generated by South School’s third graders speak to all of us about compassion. For this project, kids chose a small Maine animal and paired up with a classmate to author a tale about their two creatures. The challenge-one of the two would help the other with an act of kindness. Kids used their imaginations and agreed on a concept. Their animal stories emerged as collaborative works of art. No matter their age, kids can use their hands to tell their story.

Kindergartners are amazing! Juggling glass jars for collecting and clipboards for documenting their observations, they were in awe of what was all around them at Wheeler Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. Five and six year olds from Wiscasset, Maine soaked up everything!
