The Rockport Garden Club is pleased to announce that Kate McLeod, owner of Kate McLeod Design, will be the featured speaker at our next meeting on May 7.

Based in Belfast, Maine, Kate McLeod brings a lifetime of horticultural expertise to her creative garden design and maintenance services. Growing up in New Brunswick, Canada, as the daughter of avid gardeners, she developed a deep-rooted passion for the craft. Her personal gardens are now recognized favorites on Midcoast Maine horticultural tours, and her professional work has transformed some of the region’s most stunning residential landscapes. Her designs have been featured in several publications, showcasing her talent for creating and maintaining impactful outdoor spaces.

During the meeting, Kate will demonstrate best practices for planting a variety of containers, including window boxes, whiskey barrels, and large deck pots. She will provide specific guidance by planting two separate containers: one designed for shade and one for sun.
We invite club members and encourage the public to join us for this informative session.

Daffodils bring needed hope for winters end as spring begins!

Are you starting to see these little green beauties popping up in your garden yet?

Photos taken today, are of two different varieties planted only 12 inches apart—one early and one mid-spring—bloomer which is a great example of how you can extend the season. Here in Rockport, Maine, Narcissus, commonly known as daffodils, are among the first bulbs to emerge. They are reliable perennials that increase in number each year, proving hardy enough to withstand both cold and heat while adapting well to various garden settings. While they thrive in the sun, the blooms actually last longer in partial shade. Best of all for Maine gardeners, deer and moles tend to leave them alone.

If you bring them inside, they can last up to a week in a vase if you change the water every other day and keep them out of direct sunlight. In the garden, uncut daffodils can last from one to three weeks, depending on the temperature and variety.

It is certainly difficult to resist bringing them indoors for a bright, cheerful display.
