Our Rescue was created through the desire to save the lives of innocent animals. One Step Closer Animal Rescue, Inc. O.S.C.A.R.

All of our members have a strong passion to save as many dogs and cats as we can, as well as a commitment to ensure great futures for all of the pets we rescue. in Sparta, New Jersey, is a non-profit rescue organization that saves dogs and cats from desperate situations. We rescue pets from overcrowded shelters where animals are euthanized due to lack of space. cares for these pets and gives them the loving care they deserve. We ensure that all pets in our care receive the proper veterinary attention and vaccinations, and that the animals are spayed/neutered. All of O.S.C.A.R.'s dogs and cats are great animals that deserve loving homes. In addition, OSCAR helps the local community with strays, re-homing animals, intake of NJSPCA abuse cases, and TNR (trap neuter release on feral cats). We strongly believe in working with the community to benefit animals now and in the future through our outreach programs.

🧡 Happy Tails Update: Ace is now Frankie! 🧡

Remember Ace? This handsome Kentucky boy was just 5 months old when he went home with his new family, and wow, has he grown! 😍

Now known as Frankie, he’s turning 1 this November and is officially a big boy at 80+ pounds. His family sent us photos from his very first day home, at about 8 months, and at 10½ months, and it’s been so fun to watch him grow up.

Best of all, Frankie has a big brother! He and Finn, a 6-year-old black lab, are inseparable play-and-rumble buddies, living their best life on Lake Lackawanna. 🌊🐾

Thank you to Frankie’s family for giving him such a wonderful life and for taking the time to share these updates with us. This is exactly why we do what we do.

ADOPTABLE PUPPY: PICKLE
HOPATCONG, NJ

Meet Mr. Pickles — Your Future Favorite Pickle! 🥒 Hi hoomans! My name is Mr. Pickles, and I’d like to start by addressing the obvious… THE EARS. I mean, have you ever seen ears this adorable?! They are excellent for hearing you open a bag of treats from approximately 47 miles away. I may be a puppy, but I am already very food motivated. 😉 I LOVE playing with my toys, taking naps with my humans, and generally being adorable enough to get away with a little puppy mischief. I already know how to sit, and I’m working hard on learning paw because apparently shaking hands is an important human custom. I’m getting bigger every day and making progress with my potty training. I can also hang out in my crate for up to 4 hours, although I would like to formally request that you return sooner because I have important puppy business to attend to. My foster home is basically Puppy University. I live with my foster mom and dad, my teenage foster sisters (who are excellent nap partners), and my foster brother, who is teaching me all the important stuff about being a dog. So far, my education includes playing, napping, following the big dog around, and looking extremely cute. As for cats… 🤔 Well, I’ve never met one. So I have absolutely no idea what a cat is, what it does, or whether it would appreciate my friendship. That adventure remains unwritten! My foster mom calls me “Spicy Pickles” when I’m really living my best puppy-shenanigan life. 🌶️🥒 But honestly, humans seem to LOVE spicy pickles, so I’m taking that as a compliment. I’m looking for a family who will keep teaching me, playing with me, cuddling me, and helping me grow into the very best dog I can be.

WELCOME TO OSCAR!!!

ADOPTABLE DOG: BUTTERS
HOPATCONG, NJ

Butters is a super sweet boy. He will sit up on his back feet for upright belly rubs. He is good with other dogs and cats too. He will sleep in his crate all night. Butters tested positive for Lyme and Ehrlichia, 2 common borne tick diseases treated with an oral antibiotic which he is currently taking. Any remaining pills will be sent home with his new family for completion. Butters is feeling great and can't wait to go home with you!

So many times we put out a call for our community to help us, and we have the absolute best community who steps us for us again and again.

Last night a friend of Sussex County Technical School and Sussex Tech Mustangs Football reached out to us. This particular ally has done SO much for us over the years that we simply couldn’t say no.

WELCOME TO OSCAR!!!!

ADOPTABLE PUPPY: SEAN
HOPATCONG, NJ

Sean was part of a litter born in a hoarder home. The elderly owner agreed to let rescue step in and help rehome all the dogs. Sean's Mom looks black Lab and Dad is unknown but all the adult males look like Hound mix. Sean was exposed to Parvo virus when one of his foster mates became ill. Luckily he was taken to the vet right away and given a Parvo antibody shot and did not become sick. Sean has been recently tested and is negative for the virus. Sean is otherwise a typical puppy -social and playful and ready to find her forever home!

Happy Tails: Hunter is now Finnick! 🧡

We love hearing from our adopters, and this one made our whole day!

It’s been almost 3 months since Hunter went home with the Jakub family, and his mom Amelia tells us they can’t imagine life without him. He’s officially going by Finnick now, and by all accounts he’s the sweetest pup around. Just look at that face! 😍

Thank you, Amelia and family, for giving Finnick the loving home he deserved and for sharing these wonderful photos with us. Moments like this are exactly why we do what we do.
