Rochester City School District teachers and faculty are still dealing with missed and incorrect paychecks a year after payroll problems began with the Oracle system.

RTA Response To RCSD’s Latest Media Release:

The Rochester City School District’s latest proposal only serves to confirm the District's lack of common sensical decisive leadership.

What the District is proposing is a poor substitute for doing right by their employees. The District is trying desperately to preserve the very status quo that created their current predicament - a long-standing and self-inflicted wound.

Currently the RCSD is in negotiations with three of the four unions representing more than 90% of the RCSD employees. In these negotiations, the District is showing no sense of urgency to reach fair settlements. Instead, they are demanding health coverage concessions while falsely claiming budget deficits at a time that they have the largest reserve and surplus ($312 Million, 85% unrestricted) in addition to their nearly $1.1 Billion budget.

Doing an end run on the District employees is not the answer. Instead of grasping at straws, the District should be investing in making schools safer, lowering class sizes, providing more services for our students, and improving the terms and conditions for teachers to reduce attrition and to attract new teachers more effectively. The best vehicle for achieving that is through good faith negotiations.
