Health literacy doesn’t begin and end in the doctor’s office.

Community health ambassadors help people understand health information, ask questions, connect with resources, and take steps toward preventive care. They draw on training, lived experience, and trusted community relationships to reach people where they live, worship, and gather.

When people feel valued, seen, and heard by their healthcare providers they are more likely to keep their appointments, ask questions, and be proactive about their health. That's one idea behind health equity. With that in mind, there's still time to experience all that is on offer at the Indigenous People's Day event at RSMC--activities go until 5 p.m.!

Here are a few photos from this morning!

There are so many thanks to give and so many photographs to share from the three days of this year's special 20th anniversary A Call to Women of Color. Across a film screening, a community gathering in Genesee Valley Park, and a Little Black Dress event, one message echoed loudly: Black women need spaces where they can be seen, supported, and celebrated.

September 30 is Orange Shirt Day, a day to honor the survivors of residential and boarding schools, remember the children who never returned home, and recognize the lasting impacts these systems continue to have on Indigenous families and communities.

The day was inspired by the story of Phyllis Webstad, whose new orange shirt was taken away on her first day at a residential school, becoming a powerful symbol of the loss of identity, culture, and belonging experienced by generations of Indigenous children.

Orange Shirt Day reminds us that learning, listening, and truth-telling are essential steps toward healing and reconciliation. By wearing orange, educating ourselves about Indigenous histories and experiences, and amplifying Indigenous voices, we can all help build a more equitable future.

Strong partnerships help bring better health within reach.

We’re proud to partner with the New York State Dental Foundation who is helping more New Yorkers access oral health care through community outreach, education, workforce development, and programs designed to reach people who have historically faced barriers to care. One way they're doing that is through an upcoming dental clinic in Mt. Morris.
