On 20 February 2026, and in recognition of National Caretaker Day, Chapter President Scott Dooley and Chapter Treasurer John Page delivered 4 packages of snacks items (80 pieces per box) to Stephanie Palmer Director of Human Resources, Davis & McDaniel Veterans Care Center (DMVCC), Salem, VA, to be distributed to 4 shifts of DMVCC caretakers to thank them for their efforts to care for our great Veterans. The DMVCC is a 204-bed facility that provides affordable, high quality, comprehensive nursing, short-term rehabilitative, and long-term care options to Commonwealth of Virginia residents who are admitted to the DMVCC. The Facility and grounds at the DMVCC offer an array of amenities to include wheelchair accessible nature trails and deck, library, chapel, barber shop, and billiard room. Conveniently located next to the Salem VA Medical Center, the DMVCC is nestled in the landscape of the Blue Ridge mountainside and has been enjoyed by our veterans since it opened on Veterans Day, 1992 as the Virginia Veterans Care Center.

Before today’s EXCOM, Scott presented our “big check” to Ms. Meaghan Hubbard, Davis and McDaniel Veterans Care Center Activities Director, in support of Operation Holiday Spirit. Operation Holiday Spirit is an annual event where the Activities Director and staff give patients christmas gifts on Christmas Eve. The effort starts in October, when the patients are asked what they would like for Christmas… sometimes it is a personal item, a gift for a spouse not at the care center, or funds added to their accounts at the center. Total money required to support Operation Holiday Spirit is approximately $100 per patient.

Happy Holidays. Each year the AUSA Allegheny-Blue Ridge Chapter partners with the Davis & McDaniel Veterans Care Center and the Salem VA Medical Center to sponsor a Christmas Tree at the Hotel Roanoke in support of their Fashions for Evergreens Fundraiser for the United Way of the Roanoke Valley. The ornaments for the tree are handcrafted by the residents and patients of the DMVCC and VA and then they help decorate the tree. Please support our veterans and use the link below to vote for their patriotic tree with a small donation. We are counting on you.
