This gathering is more than just a meeting—it’s a hands-on opportunity to make a difference. Attendees will help pack Zonta Care Bags for Meals on Wheels recipients, ensuring that local seniors receive not only nutritious meals but also thoughtful items that brighten their day.

While working together, participants will also learn about Zonta’s mission to build a better world for women and girls in Riverside and beyond. The club’s initiatives focus on advocacy, education, and service projects that address issues such as gender equality, safety, and economic empowerment.

Harriet Quimby was a journalist, adventurer, and aviation pioneer who refused to let the expectations of her time keep her on the ground. In 1911, she became the first American woman to earn a pilot’s license, quickly gaining attention for both her flying skills and her signature purple satin flying suit.

Less than a year later, Quimby made history again when she became the first woman to fly solo across the English Channel on April 16, 1912. Her incredible accomplishment received less attention than expected because it occurred just one day after the sinking of the Titanic.

Although her aviation career was tragically short, Quimby challenged stereotypes and showed the world that women had a place in the skies. Her fearless spirit helped pave the way for the generations of women in aviation who followed.

In August of 1928, Amelia Earhart accepted the role of Vice President of Public Relations for the New York, Philadelphia & Washington Airways, one of the early commercial passenger airlines in the United States. This position came shortly after her historic transatlantic flight as a passenger, which had catapulted her into the public eye. The airline recognized her growing fame and pioneering spirit as valuable assets for promoting air travel at a time when many people were still wary of flying.

Earhart’s work involved more than just lending her name to the company. She actively engaged in public speaking, attended promotional events, and wrote articles to highlight the safety, efficiency, and convenience of air travel. She used her credibility as an aviator to reassure the public, emphasizing that flying was not only adventurous but also practical for business and leisure.

Her role also included fostering relationships with the press, arranging publicity campaigns, and encouraging women to consider aviation as a career. By combining her aviation expertise with her natural charisma, Earhart helped the airline build trust with potential passengers and positioned it as a forward-thinking company in a rapidly evolving industry. This experience further cemented her status as both a skilled pilot and a savvy communicator.

During the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, WE can be powerful advocates for change. You can start by educating yourselves and your peers about the campaign’s history and goals, social media, or even discussions to raise awareness.

Organizing poster displays, art exhibits, or spoken-word events can give survivors’ voices a platform. You can collaborate with local organizations to host workshops on consent, healthy relationships, and bystander intervention.

Writing letters to policymakers or creating petitions can push for stronger protections and resources. Wearing campaign colors or symbols each day can spark conversations and show solidarity.

By combining creativity, research, and community engagement, you can spread the message but also inspire others to take action. Advocacy during these 16 days is about turning awareness into tangible steps toward a safer, more equitable world.

The observance of Women’s Equality Day not only commemorates the passage of the 19th Amendment but also calls attention to women’s continuing efforts toward full equality.

Every year on August 26, we commemorate this right with National Women’s Equality Day. The United States Congress passed the 19th Amendment to the Constitution granting women full and equal voting rights on this day in 1920.

Be Kind to Humankind Week — August 25–31

Be Kind to Humankind Week, observed annually from August 25–31, is a global call to action for compassion, generosity, and empathy. Founded in 1988 by Lorraine Jara, the week encourages people to make kindness a daily habit—whether through small gestures like offering a smile or larger acts such as volunteering and advocacy. Each day carries its own theme, from “Sacrifice Our Wants for Others’ Needs Day” to “Speak Kind Words Day,” ensuring kindness touches every aspect of life.

Each day of the week has a specific theme to guide participants:
• Motorist Consideration Monday — be patient and courteous while traveling.
• Touch a Heart Tuesday — encourage others, offer help, or show appreciation.
• Willing to Lend a Hand Wednesday — assist neighbors, friends, or strangers.
• Thoughtful Thursday — treat others with respect and consideration.
• Forgive Your Foe Friday — reconcile and let go of grudges.
• Speak Nice Words Saturday — use kind words and avoid harshness.
• Sacrifice Our Wants for Others’ Needs Sunday — help those in need, whether by running errands or offering companionship.

The week promotes small but meaningful actions — from paying for someone’s coffee to volunteering — and often includes social media campaigns, donation drives, and community events. It’s a reminder that kindness is a daily practice that can create a better world.

California lawmakers are expected to pass a new law ending child marriage within the state. Currently, California is one of three states that allow children of any age to get married if a parent or guardian signs off. The bill passing through the legislature would end underage marriage with no exceptions. Advocates of the ban said that there were 35,000 underage marriages from 2000 to 2021, most of whom were girls. They said the ban is critical in protecting children from sexual assault.
