When you join the Kiwanis Club of Riverside (find out more about us at http://www.riversidekiwanis.org) you not only receive the satisfaction of supporting the youth our local area through the many service projects we accomplish each year, but you also become part of an organization family!! Last night we gathered to celebrate the holidays and enjoyed the companionship of one another. There was an opportunity drawing, a sing-along, and a wonderful dinner of tamales.
We were then entranced with a rendering, by Connie Jameson, of a “Truce in the Forrest,” a true story of young American and German soldiers encountering each other in the Belgin forest during the Battle of the Bulge, during World War II. The young men from both sides were lost having not been able to find their units and came across a home in the forest. The owner of the home, an older woman, and her children invited each small group in to get warm, treat their wound and eat a meal. Each unit had come to the house about an hour apart.
The woman fixed a prize chicken for the men; after insisting they leave their arms at the front door. The men ate together and in friendship. They left at different times to return to the battle. Nearly fifty years later two of the men rediscovered each other, the German now an American citizen, and experienced a Christmas reunion. A beautiful story and Christmas miracle.
The evening culminated in the opportunity drawing, Christmas cookies and even birthday cake! We had two members celebrating their birthday.
