In 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General specifically cited disconnection from nature as a major driver of the youth mental health crisis. An estimated 28 million American children lack access to a quality park or greenspace within walking distance of home. Why does it matter? For one thing, research finds that children who spend just 60 minutes a day in nature have a 50% lower risk of mental health issues.
A new report dives into the youth mental health crisis, calling on industry professionals and young leaders to come together to address it.
Authored by KABOOM! in collaboration with partner organizations including the Children & Nature Network, the 2026 “State of Our Kids” report examines youth mental health through the lens of topics like screen time, physical activity and nature access.
The report also has original contributions from the Advisory Council, including our CEO & President, Sarah Milligan-Toffler. Read our new Stat Sheet for stats from the report and from Sarah’s essay.
