The James Rose Center for Landscape Architectural Research and Design

The James Rose Center for Landscape Architectural Research and Design James C. Rose was one of the most colorful figures in twentieth century landscape design.

Before he died he set in motion an idea which had been in his mind for forty years; the establishment of a landscape research and design study center.

There is a quality of attention that Ikebana asks of you — a slowing down, a willingness to see a single stem or branch as something worth considering carefully.

James Rose called his sculptural arrangement of rocks within this landscape "Rock Ikebana." The sensibility has always been here.

On June 16th at 10:30am, we're hosting an Ikebana workshop on the grounds — a chance to work with natural materials, create your own arrangement to take home, and perhaps find a quieter way of seeing that stays with you.

No experience necessary. Space is limited.

What does the Center look like through an artist's eyes?

Ridgewood artist Eric Santoli has been sketching and painting at the James Rose Center this spring — and on June 13, you're invited to see what he found here. Join us for an opening reception from 3 to 5 pm, meet Eric, and explore four weeks of original works and art prints created in and inspired by this landscape.

The exhibition runs June 13–July 12. Works and prints are available for purchase.

Free admission. Register at the link in bio.

Something we're excited about this June.

We're partnering with artist Eric Santoli — plein air painter, Ridgewood native, artist-in-residence at Monet's Garden in Giverny — for an installation with original works of the James Rose Center, an opening reception on June 13th, and a workshop on June 23rd.

Mark your calendars!

A huge thank you to for the donation of their time and financial resources to plant our rooftop garden planters! The native ferns and grasses will be enjoyed by our visitors all summer long.

This is what community stewardship looks like in practice.

Thank you, sincerely. 🌿

This Saturday. 10am–4pm.

We're hosting our first volunteer day of the season at the James Rose Center — and you can come for an hour or stay all day. Whatever you can give.

The work is hands-on: grounds preparation, cleanup, and the kind of care that keeps a living historic site alive. No experience needed. Just bring yourself and whatever time you have.

May 23rd opening is close. Come help us get there.

There's a particular quality to a garden in early April.

Not quite dormant, not quite arrived. The structure is visible in a way it won't be in another few weeks — bones of the landscape before the canopy fills in.

We're in transition too. Windows and doors being repaired. Internships forming..

Opening day — May 23rd — getting closer.
