The Nick Currey Fund The Nick Currey Fund dedicated to finding a cure for Ewing's Sarcoma

12/30/2024

It's been a while since we last posted here, but the work has never stopped. With that, we're excited to share an update from this year:

We're co-funding a new project from Dr. John Lee at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Dr. Lee is doing research to advance the use of CAR T-cell therapy - using genetically engineered versions of a patient's immune cells to target and destroy cancer cells - as a treatment for advanced cases of Ewing's Sarcoma.

Dr. Lee is hopeful his research could soon lead to a first-in-human clinical trial, which could mean a treatment option for kids who need it most.

Read more about it below, and if you're interested in donating to further this critical research, visit give.curesearch.org/nick

When I was a child and I would watch television my favorite genre was always the sitcom, and I would always gravitate towards those that centered on a nuclear family. Throughout the various iterations of that kind, there always seemed to be one recurring theme: the older kids generally teased and tormented their younger siblings. In some instances, they would want nothing to do with them at all. And although I found it great comedic fodder, I found myself unable to relate to it. My brother Nick always went out of his way to include me. He was the type of brother who pulled out all the stops to make you smile and despite our age difference; he always treated me with respect. He would share with me his favorite music, television, and movies. He would pull me aside to show me something he had learned on the guitar or something new he had written. I would sleep on the floor of his room often, talking his ear off long past my bedtime and perhaps even past his about anything and everything, big and small. No matter how trivial the matter or how poorly my child brain and penchant for mumbling communicated the idea, he listened and responded. I could come to him with anything and he showed me nothing but unconditional love. He was my hero, my idol, my best friend, and my big brother.

Today would have been his 31st birthday.

I share this because growing up without my big brother was difficult, but also because I want everyone to know what we fight for. Raising money for pediatric cancer research is a combined effort to ensure we no longer lose any big brothers or little sisters or a son or a daughter. The fact that we are directly contributing to promising research for a cure is all that I could have hoped for in the wake of this personal tragedy. I thank everyone who has contributed and I urge everyone to check out the video posted below to see just how far our foundation has come.

Hi Everyone!

The 12th annual Wiffle for Cancer tournament is on Sunday June 12, 2016 at Ridgewood High School.

Online registration is now up and running for this year's tournament at wiffleforcancer.org

64 teams would give us the ideal tournament scenario, so we would love it if you guys could recruit some other teams! Spread the word and get as many people involved as you can!

We're also looking for individuals and businesses to sponsor this year's tournament. Becoming a sponsor is easy! All of the information you'll need can be found on our website.

The earlier you register your team, the better we can make the tournament for you! Don't stress over players and names for too long, those can be changed at any point after registration. So sign up as soon as possible and help us organize the best tournament we can.

Once again we thank you for your support! The Nick Currey Fund would not be where it is today without the generosity and compassion of our community.

Sincerely,

The Currey Family

Today would have been Nick's 30th birthday. As a celebration of his life and our love for him as a family, we are visiting the Star Wars exhibit at the Discovery Zone in Times Square, and then getting dinner. Additionally, today we have more to celebrate than the brief but transcendent life of Nick, we also have the comforting knowledge that the Nick Currey Fund has surpassed our fundraising goal of $1 million. When we set out back in 2004 to create the foundation, that kind of money was reserved for our wildest dreams, and now, it has become a reality. We have so many to thank for our accomplishment, CureSearch, Ridgewood High School, the DECA club, etc. Throughout the past decade plus we have been blessed and touched by the outpouring of support from our community and others committed to seeing cancer eradicated from our world. What's more, those commitments of time and money and man hours have stood the test of time, as after 11 years, we still see the same kind of turnout and support at our fundraising events. As his brother, I cannot even begin to express my gratitude for the people that have made this goal a reality, all I can say is that one of mine and my family's biggest sources of comfort has been the continued success of our foundation. So for that, and for all of you out there who deserve the utmost praise for your support and sacrifices, we thank you sincerely.
