Today we participated in Scout Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church Richmond VA. Today is also the 116th anniversary of scouting so it was a fitting day to help the church collect donations for their Soup-er Bowl fundraiser benefiting local food banks. Our troop was recognized by the church, led a prayer, and helped during the tithing.

Troop 799G braved single digit temperatures and some icy roads to spend a day at the Virginia State Capitol! We started our morning with a visit with our State Senator Schuyler VanValkenburg () followed by some time observing a House committee (where we ran into one of our local delegates - Rodney Willet ). Then we spent some time in the Capitol buildings learning about architecture, legislative processes, and history, followed by time exploring the old senate and house halls (where we could actually sit at the tables they used). The day was capped off by floor recognition from Senator VanValkenburg and our Lt. Governor and two hours of rather interesting debate on a number of bills, including one to declare the brown belted bumble bee the state native pollinator of Virginia. We plan on following this particular piece of legislation as it makes its way through both chambers and hopefully onto the Governor’s desk. In a few weeks we’ll be heading to DC to continue our focus on community and civics.

What a weekend! Troop 799g enjoyed our first Heart of Virginia Council, Scouting America Winter Camp immensely! Friday started with games in the dining hall and meeting our bunk mates. Saturday was merit badges, campfire, skits, charades, stargazing and s’mores. Sunday some of us participated in honor guard, more merit badges and SNOW (!!!) followed by games and lots of snacks. Monday we did a conservation project and went for a hike (we saw evidence of beavers, racoons, and bobcats).

Our scouts signed up for all different sorts of merit badge classes including Archaeology, Astronomy, Art, Orienteering, Wilderness Survival, and Mammal Studies.

Next on the agenda is a visit to the Virginia State Capitol to meet with a state senator and view the General Assembly morning session.

It was a beautiful weekend to camp at Virginia State Parks ! We enjoyed James River State Park’s geocaching ranger program, learned about local wildlife, cooked a tasty supper, lit a fire using the fire starters we made last week, and even played in a Batteau Boat! The night sky was so clear and the stars were incredible with the Milky Way right over us while we were sitting at the campfire. It was a special weekend and we are so excited for our next trip.

If you know of any girls in grades 5-11 who might be interested in joining us, please reach out! We have a lot of fun activities planned and would love for them to join us!

It was a beautiful day on the Buttermilk Trail! We enjoyed a half day hike through Forest Hill Park and along the James River on the Buttermilk Trail. This trail is special because it feels like you’re in the middle of the forest but you’re actually right in the middle of the city.

We identified different trees and plants, identified the rock formation (Petersburg Granite) the we were on, and enjoyed a lovely post-hike lunch at the Larson’s home.

Our first camping trip at Camp T. Brady Saunders in September was a hit! We enjoyed perfect weather, creating skits, clear night skies, and a pasta buffet for dinner. We earned out Firem’n Chit, learned about native plants, and explored the camp. What a wonderful weekend!
