Sustainable Hudson Valley

Sustainable Hudson Valley Our mission is to speed up the transition to a low-carbon economy with high quality of life for all. linktr.ee/sustainhv

We help communities implement climate action plans with amped-up public participation including 100% renewable energy strategies. Climate change is advancing and so is human creativity to fight back, shift our power systems to renewables, design our communities for self-reliance, and channel investment into work that is genuinely productive of community wealth. There are revolutions going on in ar

chitecture, energy systems, agriculture, product design, and communications, supporting these ideas. We think the biggest revolution is in the capacity of communities to get involved and set their own creative course. There is a lot of talk about resilience - the ability to withstand crises and bounce back better. That same quality of strength and resourcefulness is what we need to draw on to prevent unnecessary crises and build more stress-resistant, durable, beautiful places to live and work. Sustainable Hudson Valley is a project developer, resource broker and thought leader in this work. Tap our networks at http://www.hvresourcecenter.org

We have more Climate Solutions Week events! Swipe through to learn more about them 🌳

Come learn how Vassar College is pushing forward sustainability through an outdoor walking tour that showcases building decarbonization, waste reduction, and regeneration of the campus ecosystem; a space to learn about the rewards and challenges of pushing forth sustainability.

This event allows community members to participate directly in the Local Waterfront Revitalization Program planning process. The Fall Kill Blueway project in Poughkeepsie will employ methods that allow community members to continuously inform the project’s goals and priorities, getting residents to engage with the creek and play a direct role in local waterfront planning. This event is one of these opportunities for the public to share their ideas and influence the project.

This workshop is being held specifically in support of the Fall Kill Blueway, an urban planning project between the City of Poughkeepsie, MASS Design and Scenic Hudson, supported through the city’s LWRP grant to revitalize the Fall Kill creek.

Immerse yourself in an inspiring tour of some of the most innovative green building and regenerative design principles ever realized. When it was completed, the Omega Center for Sustainable Living was the world’s only building to meet both LEED Platinum and Living Building Challenge standards. Its all-natural water purification system, the Eco Machine, treats all of Omega’s wastewater without chemicals. Come see why architects, planners, engineers, and others from around the world continue to find inspiration and deepen their connection to the natural world by touring this one-of-a-kind facility.

While renewable energy has become the most affordable and fast-to-install energy source, it still faces backlash on aesthetics, and there is growing opposition to solar development by outside companies in the home-rule culture of rural New York. This event will convene artists, landscape architects and solar developers to think creatively about how to change the narrative by designing solar installations (at any scale) that are beautiful and designed based on community choices.

Join us for a panel discussion and case study around circularity and sustainability in the Hudson Valley. After the panel discussion you will be able to go behind the scenes of Kingston Standard Brewing and see their CO2 capture system.

Concerned about battery energy storage systems (BESS) and the battle unfolding? Interested in a well-informed public process? This technical briefing is for you.

Greg Gallucio, MS is a retired electric engineer who worked for Underwriters Labs for 21 years. He will present unbiased information about BESS and help you understand the technology and considerations at hand.

This briefing will be moderated by Joe Bowermaster of Ocean 8 films.

This educational event will allow participants to see what is inside a ductless heat pump, what has accumulated after years of heating and cooling, and learn about proper maintenance and care.

Marcy Cleveland will participate as a clean energy coach and homeowner. The event will be informal and interactive, with time for attendees to ask questions, talk with the experts and mingle with other local homeowners. Light refreshments and beverages will be provided. Attendance will be limited and advance registration required so that participants can comfortably see the demonstration and interact with the presenters.

The goal is to give both current and prospective heat pump owners a practical, firsthand understanding of heat pump technology and maintenance, while providing an opportunity to learn from professionals and other homeowners. Attendees who participate in the event will also receive 25% off a p

New York made history this summer as the first state to impose a moratorium on new hyperscale data center development. That one-year clock is already ticking — and when it runs out, the state will need policies ready to go. Get this wrong and New Yorkers face higher electricity bills, a strained grid, and a clean energy transition quietly derailed. Get it right and the data center boom could actually accelerate the clean energy future and put money back in ratepayers’ pockets.

Tom Konrad, Ph.D., CFA, has been in the weeds on this — not just watching from the sidelines, but actively engaged in New York regulatory proceedings on data center and grid issues. He’ll share what he’s learned from the inside: what the real risks are, what good policy looks like, and why the answer isn’t as simple as slamming the door — or leaving it wide open.
You’ll leave with a clearer picture of what’s actually at stake, and a perspective you won’t get from the headlines.

Thursday of Climate Solutions Week is packed full of amazing events! From a webinar on climate resilience to a mixer to a panel on solar panels there’s something for everyone. Swipe through to see our lineup of events on September 17!

Join us for a webinar on why climate resilience is needed!

Climate change adaptation and resilience planning empowers communities to pinpoint vulnerabilities against future climate risks and implement protective strategies for people, places, and nature. Taking proactive measures against severe weather saves lives and money by preventing property loss, reducing repair costs, and safeguarding public health. Furthermore, resilient enhancements such as green spaces and restored wetlands elevate daily life, generate jobs, boost ecosystems, and unite neighborhoods to support vulnerable populations.

As communities respond to the climate crisis, our ability to collaborate across organizations, sectors, and perspectives has become just as important as technical expertise. This workshop equips participants with practical facilitation tools that strengthen democratic participation, deepen relationships, and help groups navigate complexity with greater clarity, care, and effectiveness.

Sliding scale options from FREE to $65 with $40 recommended fee

We’ll bring together leaders from economic development, architecture, planning, sustainability, and community building to begin an important conversation about what it takes to create cities that are not only environmentally sustainable, but fundamentally designed around human well-being, creativity, and connection.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) can reduce the reliance on fossil fuel peaker power plants that are typically used during peak demand for power.

Pollutants such as PM2.5 are produced from peaker plants, in contrast to BESS, which do not produce any air pollution during charging or discharging energy.

Therefore, battery technology can lead to a reduction in fossil fuel dependency, leading to a cleaner air and environment.
