The Village of Rhinebeck's Climate Smart Task Force is working to encourage, implement, and quantify the village's efforts to address the climate crisis.
We are doing so by participating in NY State's Climate Smart Communities Program.

We spent yesterday in Albany visiting with lawmakers to get to YES for the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act. Call your state senators and assemblymembers to push leadshership to bring it for a vote! A group of Rhinebeckers and friends from Westchester and Milan and Claverack joined up with probably about 100 volunteers from across NY organized by . It was incredible to be part of the “sausage getting made” and hopefully that sausage will be less contaminated by microplastics in the future 😉🧴🍾♻️🗑️🗳️🧃🥤📦

Congrats to the Bulkeley Middle School environmental club students who successfully rolled out composting in the cafeteria today!!! The students had given presentations to each science class in school, explaining why composting matters and how young people can have an impact. This week, volunteers from the Climate Smart Task Force are helping out during lunches, reinforcing this message from the student leaders. On day 1, about 20lbs of food scraps were diverted from the landfill!

Rhinebeck has partnered with Helpsy, a certified B Corp, to provide at home clothing recycling to residents. It saves money, time, and the planet’s resources. Recycling your

Rhinebeck Village got Silver in NYState’s Climate Smart Communities program! 💚🩶💚There are only two other silver municipalities in Dutchess County and 23 in NYS. All but 5 are in the Hudson Valley 🙌. This was a 6 year effort with the help of wonderful community volunteers and the full support of Mayor Bassett and the Village Board. The Rhinebeck Climate Smart Task Force is working to encourage, implement, and quantify the village's efforts to address the climate crisis. We are doing so by coordinating our participation in NY State's Climate Smart Communities Program (CSC), which provides helpful tools and frameworks and opens us up to the potential for greater State funding around our sustainability efforts.
The goal of the Climate Smart Community Taskforce is to meaningfully assist the village in building a more just, resilient, and livable future in Rhinebeck.
Mayor Bassett and the Village Board have formed this task force, and have appointed Vanessa Bertozzi to serve as the coordinator.
The CSC Task Force meets monthly, on the second Wednesday of each month at Village Hall. Core task force members are expected to manage projects which contribute specifically to the CSC framework and help us build a more sustainable future for Rhinebeck.
The Task Force focuses on the Village, because the NY State program works on a municipal level. However, in Summer 2020, we started to join forces with the Joint Town/Village Environmental Committee. This is exciting—we can make more of an impact, the more we work together. The Joint EC includes: Vanessa Bertozzi (Chair), Josh Pulver (Town Board), Monique Segarra (Bard Center for Environmental Policy), Dan Shapley (Director of Riverkeeper’s Water Quality Program), Andrew Hunter (Engineer).
