Climate Smart Rhinebeck The Village of Rhinebeck's Climate Smart Task Force is working to encourage, implement, and quantify the village's efforts to address the climate crisis.

We are doing so by participating in NY State's Climate Smart Communities Program.

We had an awesome time today sharing how the Rhinebeck municipal compost program works 🤎 Ellersliestables with food scraps from the community and an innovative h**p horse bedding h**psteedusa and horse 💩 - the end product is finished compost certified for use on organic farms Hempost . In the cabinets you see here there are blowers that intermittently force air through perforated pipes under the compost piles. This aerated system oxygenates the process and keeps the microbes very happy. The piles heat up to about 140degrees for three days!

Excited to share how to get started with municipal composting in partnership with a local farm Hempost h**psteedusa ! RSVP for the Sept 12 tour and spread the word. This is a model that can totally work in other towns. Using h**p-based horse or chicken bedding makes the compost process even easier and higher quality plus there is closed loop potential for the h**p industry in the Hudson Valley. 5 years ago The Village of Rhinebeck planted 100 saplings for a planting along the Landsman Kill to make a ✨Riparian Buffer✨ Today we visited the site with program managers from the DEC and we are happy to report the plants are thriving! We lost about half (which is normal) but the survivors have gotten so tall over the past 5 years and have sent out roots that stabilize the stream’s banks and soak up flood waters. The plants create native habitat for wildlife and shade for aquatic species. Shoutout to Climate Smart Task Force and Tree Commission volunteers, staff from the Village’s Highway Dept, and Marist student collaborators who have tended to the plantings once or twice a year. 🌱Did you know that the Hudson Valley is the only region of NY that still has a Trees for Tribs program?

Well, it is truly astounding how much stretchy plastic waste we generate! At the same time we are so proud that between Earth Day and June 30, the Rhinebeck community has collectively gathered over 1000 pounds for the and all this and more will be recycled into composite decking. Thank you to Rhinebeck At Home volunteers who tirelessly sorted and weighed plastic and to Tops our friendly neighborhood grocery store where you should drop this plastic regularly after June 30. 7 Livingston, where Jeff and Leola the landlords hosted us for the duration of the competition, will no longer be the drop-off spot! However, they have a recycling shed there where you can drop off particularly hard a to recycle items like corks. Our big takeaway—-> avoid single use as much as you possibly can in the first place 😝Thank you thank you! ♻️

The national NexTrex Challenge continues through the end of June! Drop your stretchy, clean and dry plastic at the collection spot in the 7 Livingston parking lot. Rhinebeck At Home volunteers weigh it and submit it to Trex where it’s recycled into Trex composite decking. It adds up! After the competition is done, you can drop this plastic at the collection bins at Tops entrances.

Wow! We are blown away by the turnout today at the Rhinebeck Earth Day event, despite nasty weather. Thank you to the incredible volunteers and all the folks who lugged over their used clothes, batteries, brown paper bags, and plastic for the NexTrex Challenge/ Recycle-a-palooza. We gave out 100 bags+ to municipal compost program participants and enjoyed a wildlife show from and the one and only Milo’s Menagerie (14 year old naturalist phenom) 💚💗💚 It really gives you hope when you see what a community can do together
