1 in 5 college students in California reported experiencing human trafficking during college.*

The good news is that now there is a law to help end human trafficking at California colleges and universities. On September 30, Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB 1845 - the Student Safety and Anti-Exploitation Act. This law requires California colleges and universities to train their campus employees to recognize and report suspected cases of human trafficking and exploitation.

Working with survivors and other experts, Freedom Insight will aim to adapt our existing training to address the realities of trafficking on college campuses, including:
- student-specific vulnerabilities
- indicators of exploitation
- trauma-informed, victim-centered responses, and
- reporting protocols.

*A study of nearly 1,000 students across 12 colleges and universities in San Diego and Imperial counties found that nearly 1 in 5 reported experiencing human trafficking during college.

When a human trafficking raid on a brothel happened less than a mile from my kid’s elementary school, it shook me.

This “large scale operation” was being run out of a commercial building. 7 adult human trafficking victims were found and 6 s*x buyers were arrested.

1 mile away from my kid’s school.

That’s what I can’t stop thinking about.

It’s a sobering fact that human trafficking exists in your community. Freedom is stolen from others, while I do my afternoon school pick up.

At Freedom Insight, our mission is to disrupt the business of human trafficking. We make it difficult for traffickers to conduct their business by training people who work in frontline industries - airports, hotels, apartment complexes - places where trafficking victims are forced to move, work, and sleep.

When people are trained, a trafficker’s business can crumble.

Traffickers often withhold IDs to keep victims trapped, making it nearly impossible for survivors to escape and board a plane to reach safety. Since 2020, over 1,000 human trafficking survivors have called hotline lacking IDs, making air travel to escape danger nearly impossible.

New bipartisan legislation introduced to Congress aims to fix this.

The Jimmy Deal Trafficking Survivors Assistance Act, introduced by Sens. Moran (R-KS) & Cortez Masto (D-NV), with House companion bill by Rep. Lee (D-NV-03), would:

- Require every TSA-screening airport to designate a trained employee as a Trafficking Survivor Point of Contact.
- Partner TSA with human trafficking service providers to help survivors fly without standard IDs.
- Provide trauma-informed care to ensure survivors are treated with dignity as they navigate airport security and reunite with loved ones or care providers.

When a survivor decides to flee, timing is everything. Lack of documentation should never stand between a survivor and their path to freedom.

During the six FIFA World Cup matches held at Levi’s Stadium, a Bay Area task force worked together to identify and support 53 human trafficking survivors, including 11 juveniles.

The regional response brought together law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, social workers, advocates, and analysts from 11 Northern California counties. Participating agencies conducted 66 separate operations, which resulted in:
- 53 survivors identified and offered support, including 42 adults and 11 juveniles
- 25 suspected traffickers arrested
- 41 s*x buyers cited

Survivors were connected with confidential advocates from and and offered individualized assistance, including safety planning, emergency supplies, blankets, toiletries, temporary housing, and other supportive services.

By combining intelligence, investigative resources, survivor advocacy, and regional coordination in the enhanced operations center, participating agencies were able to act on information in minutes that might otherwise have taken days or weeks to develop.

Criminal networks lure people with promises of legitimate work. Instead, many are trafficked into scam operations, where they are stripped of their freedom and forced to carry out online fraud under threats, violence, debt and fear.

Preventing this crime requires stronger oversight of recruitment agencies, safe labour migration pathways and greater awareness of deceptive recruitment practices.

July 30th is World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. Let’s shine light on the many human trafficking victims trapped behind scams.
