🚗 Drivers: Please reduce your speed in school zones. Stay alert for crossing guards and watch for children who may unexpectedly enter the road.

🎒 Students: Stay focused, follow the rules, and never be afraid to ask safety questions.

Smoke alarm safety is a must. Did you know that your local community might offer free installations of battery-operated smoke alarms?

A home fire can become deadly in under two minutes. Your loved ones could be unconscious from smoke inhalation by then. Working smoke alarms reduce your risk of dying in a house fire by 50%. Yet, many North Carolinians have non-working alarms due to dead batteries or outdated units.

If you have smoke alarms in your home, take 10 minutes to:

✅ Test every smoke alarm in your home
✅ Change batteries (replace units every 10 years)
✅ Check to see if alarms are installed in every bedroom, hallway, and living space

Before the Bell Rings: Is Your School Fire-Safe?

Back-to-school season is coming fast. Families are excited. Teachers are preparing. But there's one thing schools need to do before students walk through those doors: verify fire safety.

For Teachers:
✅ Know your evacuation route and procedures
✅ Know how many students are in your class
✅ Keep classroom exits clear at all times
✅ Practice staying calm during fire drills

Safe Kids North Carolina was proud to host a Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Certification Course in Cumberland County!

The week wrapped up with a child passenger safety check event hosted by the Fayetteville Fire Department, where participants put their newly learned knowledge and hands-on skills into action by assisting local families with the proper installation and use of child safety seats.

We're excited to welcome 18 newly certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians! Their dedication and commitment will help protect children and provide life-saving education to families in communities across North Carolina.

A special thank you to the Fayetteville Fire Department and everyone who helped make this course a success. Your partnership and commitment to child passenger safety are making a real difference.

Safe Kids North Carolina was proud to partner with Safe Kids Pitt County and the Governor's Highway Safety Program to raise awareness about the dangers of hot cars and the importance of preventing heatstroke in children.

A special thank you to the fire departments, law enforcement agencies, EMS personnel, and community safety partners who joined us to help educate families and share this lifesaving message. Your dedication to protecting North Carolina's children made this event a tremendous success.

Together, we're reminding everyone to Look Before You Lock and take a moment to check the back seat every time you leave your vehicle. One simple habit can save a life.

Thank you to everyone who attended, participated, and helped spread awareness throughout the community. Together, we can help prevent these tragic, yet preventable, incidents.

🌡️ Your Kid Doesn't Have to Learn Heat Safety the Hard Way! Summer heat in North Carolina is no joke, and heat exhaustion can be life-threatening. Here's the thing: kids don't always tell you when they're overheating. Signs of heat exhaustion in children often include heavy sweating (or NO sweating!), sudden weakness, or even confusion/agitation.

What do you do when you suspect heat exhaustion? It's easy:
✅ Move them to shade or inside
✅ Cool them down (cool water to drink, ice packs on neck/armpits)
✅ Call 911 if symptoms don't improve in 30 minutes

However, remember the importance of heat stroke prevention. Remember to:
☀️Limit outdoor activity during peak NC heat (11 AM - 3 PM)
👚Dress them in light, loose clothing, and never leave kids in hot cars (ever)
🌡️Know the heat index, not just the temperature

Coaches, camp directors, parents, and educators: You're responsible for kids during summer programs and playtime.
Know these signs. Act fast. Your awareness prevents heat stroke. Your kids aren't overreacting: it's basic heat safety!

Congratulations to the 24 new Child Passenger Safety (CPS) Technicians who were certified last week!
Look at these dedicated professionals from Wilkes, Alexander, Catawba, and Mecklenburg counties who are now equipped with the knowledge and skills to help keep children safe on NC roads.
Thank you to the Wilkes County Sheriff's Office for serving as our host agency and helping make this training a success.
We also want to extend our appreciation to Murphy Gas Station on W. US Hwy. 421 for donating ice to keep our students, instructors, and community members cool throughout the event. Your support made a real difference!
