May is Stroke Awareness Month, a time to come together, spread awareness, and learn the signs that could help save someone’s life 💙 Whether it’s a friend, parent, spouse, coworker, or even yourself, understanding the facts about stroke can make a life-changing difference when every second counts. Here’s a few things you may not know about strokes:

🧠 Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke.

🧬 Approximately 80% of strokes are considered preventable through healthy lifestyle changes and proper risk management.

⚠️ Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability worldwide and in the United States.

📚 Only about two-thirds of U.S. adults can correctly identify the major warning signs of stroke.

🧓 Stroke risk doubles every 10 years after age 55, but strokes can happen at ANY age.

🩸 High blood pressure is the leading cause of stroke and is often called the “silent killer” because many people don’t realize they have it.

🩺 About 1 in 4 stroke survivors will experience another stroke.

🗣️ Knowing the signs could save a life. Remember the acronym BE FAST:
B – Balance loss
E – Eye/vision changes
F – Face drooping
A – Arm weakness
S – Speech difficulty
T – Time to call 911 immediately

In the U.S., survivors often need far more physical, occupational, and speech therapy than insurance provides, but coverage runs out too soon.

That’s where BELIEVE steps in.

Through grants, donations, and sponsorships, we partner with vetted outpatient rehab centers to provide continued PT, OT, SLP, and equipment to survivors in North Carolina who still need therapy but can no longer afford it.

Because no one should have to choose between recovery and cost.

In loving memory of Kristen McGowan 🤍

Kristen was a true warrior in every sense. She faced life with strength, grace, and an unwavering spirit. A devoted wife, loving mother, and cherished friend, she brought warmth, humor, and light to everyone around her.

In the BELIEVE community, Kristen was more than a grant recipient. She was a dear friend, and an inspiration to us and so many other stroke warriors. She shared her journey with honesty and courage, showing others what it means to keep going, even on the hardest days. She formed meaningful connections, lifted others up, and left a lasting mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her.

Her life was a reflection of love, faith, and resilience, and her story will continue to inspire others.

We are honored to have known her, to have shared her story, and to carry her memory forward. We hold her family, friends, and fellow warriors close in our thoughts and prayers as we honor and remember her life. Rest in peace Kristen 💙

Some days feel slower than others, and that’s okay. Progress isn’t always loud or obvious, but it’s always worth celebrating. Every effort, every attempt, every “try again” is a step forward.
