The Punta Gorda Garden Club, Inc. (PGGC) and Keep Charlotte Beautiful, Inc. (KCB) have joined forces in honor of America 250 to beautify the Blue Star Memorials in Punta Gorda. Together, the two organizations successfully secured grant funding from Keep America Beautiful ($500) and the National Garden Clubs, Inc. ($1,000) to enhance both memorial locations with patriotic red, white, and blue plantings that honor the spirit of our nation’s milestone anniversary.
On May 29th, volunteers from both the PGGC and KCB gathered at Lashley Park near the Vietnam Wall of Southwest Florida to complete the first of the two marker beautifications. Ten dedicated volunteers representing the PGGC, Punta Gorda Girlfriends, Save Charlotte Harbor, and KCB came together to remove weeds, plant 31 drought-tolerant plants, and lay mulch — completing the entire project in just one hour! The plants selected reflect both the patriotic theme and the need for sustainability in our Florida climate, and include Fire Bush, Coontie, White Vinca, Scarlet Sage, and Blue Daze.
A special moment came when Mr. Richard Carr, representing the Vietnam Memorial Wall of Southwest Florida, and his buddy Bear stopped by to personally thank the volunteers for their hard work and dedication. He will be sharing photos of the completed project on his website.
This project is a true testament to what our community can accomplish when we work together. Thank you goes to the PGGC members who developed the planting plan, secured the necessary permissions from the City of Punta Gorda, pursued and obtained the grant funding, and who continue to embrace the spirit of collaboration with KCB. We are also deeply grateful to Keep America Beautiful and the National Garden Clubs, Inc. for recognizing the value of these projects and providing the funding to make them a reality.
We look forward to completing the second Blue Star Memorial enhancement and continuing to cultivate beauty, patriotism, and community pride throughout Punta Gorda!
