Beagles are the best!

Beagles are the best!

This dog used his body as a shield — and it saved her life.

At 4:30 a.m. on a Sunday in Philadelphia, a brave beagle named Che began barking frantically as a fire broke out in the two-story Port Richmond rowhouse he shared with his owner. There were no working smoke detectors. Che’s voice became the only alarm.

Neighbors woke to the relentless barking, soon noticing thick smoke and flames. Within minutes, multiple 911 calls were made. When one neighbor looked outside, the entire first floor was already engulfed.

When firefighters arrived, they discovered something extraordinary.

Che — a loyal beagle — was lying protectively on top of his owner, Andrea Bulat, who had fallen unconscious from smoke inhalation. Even in the chaos, he refused to leave her side.

“The dog stayed on her chest the whole time, which prevented her from being burned totally,” said neighbor Adele Butler.

Both Che and Andrea had to be revived with oxygen at the scene. Andrea was rushed to Temple University Hospital in critical condition, suffering burns over 50% of her body.

Che, a senior rescue beagle adopted years earlier, was also revived by firefighters and later taken into care by Red Paw Relief, an emergency response organization for pets.

“I think because of the dog being there, that really saved her,” Butler said. “If the dog wasn’t there, she’d probably be dead.”

Through smoke, fire, and fear — Che chose love. He chose loyalty. He chose to stay.

A true hero… with a beagle’s heart.
