An ancient sacred art, written alive today.
How does an art form survive for over a thousand years? Through the dedicated hands of
modern-day iconographers.
The icons featured in our upcoming summer exhibition, Agios: A Communion of Saints, aren’t
just paintings—they are the result of a rigorous, spiritual discipline passed down through
generations. Working in the classic Byzantine style, artists at the Classical Iconography Institute
preserve one of the oldest cultural heritages of both the East and West.
From creating the precise geometry of the initial layout to slowly building layers using traditional
egg tempera and gold leaf, these modern artists invite us into a timeless tradition. As Christine
Schlesser, Executive Director of the Institute, notes:
“Through these ancient images, we invite you to slow down, look deeply, and
consider what shapes a meaningful life, what heals the human heart, and what it
means to become more fully human.

Join us at the Mount Angel Abbey Library this summer to experience these magnificent
“windows to heaven” in person.
📅 Exhibition Dates: June 13 – August 2, 2026
📍 Location: Mount Angel Abbey Library Entryway. Visit mountangelabbey.org/library for hours.
Parking and admission are free. The facility is ADA accessible.

Explore the lives of the saints through original icons created by modern-day
iconographers in the ancient tradition, this summer at Mount Angel Abbey.
As Christine Schlesser, Executive Director of the Classical Iconography Institute,
reminds us:
“The lives of the saints remind us that transformation often emerges through struggle,
courage, loss, compassion, and unexpected grace... Through these ancient images, we
invite you to slow down, look deeply, and consider what shapes a meaningful life.

Whether you are drawn to the deep spiritual history or the meticulous craft, we invite you
to come, slow down, and look closely.
