Author and filmmaker Brian Libby’s new book, "In Search of Portland: Exploring a Transforming City," celebrates the central city’s cultural legacy and placemaking, from luminaries like filmmaker Gus Van Sant, novelist Ursula Le Guin, and painter Mark Rothko to landmarks like Pioneer Courthouse Square and Powell’s Books.

Brian has curated an evening of short films, excerpts from longer films, and selections from the Oregon Historical Society archive to explore this legacy which makes greater downtown Portland (including Old Town and the Pearl District) such an incredibly unique place. The evening will begin with a discussion of Brian’s book followed by a slideshow presentation.

For ten years, the Portland Dance Film Fest has been lucky enough to grow alongside an extraordinary community of Oregon artists. This program is a love letter to that community and the artists who have helped create this festival.

This evening looks back at where we’ve come from as a dance film community. Woven throughout are the Live Dance Film Creations made during the festivals, works born in just a few hours, with artists making, filming, editing, and sharing something together in real time. There will be a Q+A session following this screening.

Festival Picks brings together eleven films from nine countries that show just how many ways dance can tell a story and where dance film is now. What ties these films together isn't a single style or theme; it's the exploration that movement can express something words can't. Inspired by the experiences of the s*x workers Borden met while making her underground feminist landmark Born in Flames, Working Girls reveals the textures of a day in the life of Molly (Louise Smith), a photographer working part-time in a Manhattan brothel, as she juggles a steady stream of clients, balances relationships with her coworkers with the demands of an ambitious madam, and above all fights to maintain her sense of self in a business in which the line between the personal and the professional is all too easily blurred. In viewing prostitution through the lens of labor, Borden boldly desensationalizes the subject, offering an empathetic, humanizing, often humorous depiction of women for whom this work is just another day at the office." –Janus Films
