A message from Marv - thanking Michael Ellegaard
Hello Friends,
I want to introduce you to my friend Mike Ellegaard who grew and donated more than 220 pounds of amazing fresh produce to our Plant A Row program last year. Try to imagine Mike’s vegetable garden located in Manhasset Isle as having the appearance of his home being dropped in the middle of it. Mike has used every available space to grow, both along his fences and climbing the walls of his home in addition to an amazing stand of corn located at his mailbox.
Mike has a great sense of humor and can take some kidding about his passion for growing his food, but he doesn’t kid about how he feels about sharing with families who can’t afford the produce that he grows. He wants everyone near and far in the Port community to join him and feel the blessings of giving back.
Mike is clearly our Champion in the Port community for his dedication to our program . Mike wants 2026 to be an even better year.
Friends it is that time of year to join Mike in growing your own wonderful vegetable garden ,to enjoy for yourselves, as well as donating some for others.
Simply drop your produce any day to Alper's Hardware on Main Street and our volunteer Pick up and Delivery team will deliver to our local pantries that service hundreds of families.

This week, Plant A Row volunteers, including Schreiber students completing their Senior Experience with us, harvested 40 bags of fresh lettuce to donate to local food pantries here in Port Washington.
These plants started as seeds, and with the the proper TLC from our volunteers, they were nurtured into food for our community. 🌱🥗

In Port Washington, showing up looks like this.

It’s hands in the soil, growing fresh food that will end up on a neighbor’s table.
It’s young people learning how to care for the environment and protect the spaces we all share.
It’s volunteers coming together—on cold days included—to clean the streets we walk every day.
It’s moments of connection, where stories are shared and generations sit down over a simple meal.

These aren’t big, distant changes. They’re happening right here, in the places we pass by every day.

And they all start the same way—someone decides to show up.

Beautiful day for our plant delivery! Many thanks to Pat at Bonnie Plants for organizing and driving the wide variety of donated plants out to Port Washington.
And a big shout out to the Navigators from The Nicholas Center for helping us unload it all. We are grateful to one and all and look forward to planting everything to help our neighbors facing food insecurity!
