On a recent plane trip, as we were all disembarking, I walked past a mother and a child still seated. They were reading Blueberries for Sal.
I said, “Blueberries for Sal! I love that book. I remember my mother reading it to me.”
Mother and child both looked up. The mother smiled and said, “She wanted to hear the story just one more time. How could I refuse?”
“You couldn’t,” I said. “Thank goodness you didn’t.”
To everyone who reads a book aloud to a child “just one more time”—thank goodness for you.

Our Story

Light One Little Candle is designed to encourage cancer patients who are also caregivers to continue to bond with the children in their lives throughout their illness by reading books together that have nothing to do with cancer. The idea is for patients to get lost in classic and funny stories about life, like The Velveteen Rabbit, Winnie-the-Pooh and The Little Prince.

Light One Little Candle was founded in April 2005 by Joelle Pauporte, a young physician, wife and mother diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. As her health deteriorated, one essential way she stayed strengthened her bond with her young daughter was by reading together. Today her legacy lives on through the Foundation's work with a growing network of cancer centers, who are accepting donations and distributing new children’s books on behalf of Light One Little Candle. We currently have 11 partners: MidState Medical Center, Meriden, CT; Middlesex Hospital, Middletown, CT; Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, New London, CT; Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, NY; CancerCare, New York, NY; CancerCare of New Jersey, Ridgewood, NJ; Dana-Farber/Brigham & Women's Cancer Center, Boston, MA and at 4 satellite facilities around MA and 1 in NH; Moores UCSD Cancer Center, La Jolla, CA; Dempsey Center, Lewiston, ME; UT Southwestern Harold C. Simmons Cancer Center, Dallas, TX; and Valley Health System, Paramus, NJ. Each patient who participates can choose a new book to bring home to share with his or her child; the book is theirs to keep. A wide range of books in both English, Spanish and a variety of languages are being offered for children of all ages.
