We are a private, managed-admission animal shelter serving the tri-state area for over 50 years & are funded by donations & municipal contracts.

At the Humane Society of Port Jervis/Deerpark, we are passionate about ensuring the protection and welfare of all animals in need. This passion is the Mission of our service and the legacy that was left to us by our founder Robert Kleinstuber. Robert began the shelter in 1959 as a memorial to his beloved dog, Jeff. His hard work paved the way for the Humane Society of Port Jervis/Deerpark. This spirit is what drives us each day to do the best we can for the good of all animals. We currently contract with 10 local municipalities as their Animal Control sheltering services. Our coverage handles a good portion of western Orange County and a couple of towns in Sullivan County. Persons finding stray animals should contact their town or city animal control officer. We focus on serving the needs of animals that are right here within our community and sometimes assist with non-local pets when we can. We work with pet owners who must surrender their pets; those needing assistance should contact the shelter to schedule a time when we can best accommodate your pet.

A huge thank you to The Michaels Organization for coming out last weekend and helping us with so many important projects! ❤️ Your kindness, generosity, and hard work made such a difference. From cleaning our gutters and mowing the lawn to organizing our garage, properly disposing of medications we can no longer keep to ensure we remain in compliance with regulations and limits, and helping set up our new washer and dryer, you all went above and beyond!
We are so grateful for your time, support, and willingness to lend a helping hand. Your efforts have made things easier, safer, and more organized for us, and we truly appreciate everything you’ve done.

Laverne Deserves Her Forever Home!
Laverne was recently adopted but, through no fault of her own, found herself back at the shelter less than a week later. We are absolutely heartbroken for her. 💔 She deserves a family who will love her forever, and we know her perfect match is out there! At just 10 months old and approximately 35 pounds, Laverne is a Coonhound mix. And believe it or not… she’s not nearly as noisy as you might expect! 😉
This sweet, well-mannered puppy has so much to offer! Laverne does a wonderful job entertaining herself while enjoying time outside in our play yards. She walks beautifully on a leash and loves meeting both people and other animals. She’s a happy, easygoing girl with a playful personality and an endless amount of love to give. Laverne would make a wonderful addition to a family looking for an affectionate, fun-loving companion to grow up with and love for years to come. She is spayed, up-to-date on her core vaccines, dewormed, and microchipped. Please help us find Laverne the forever home she deserves! Share her story, spread the word, and help us get this beautiful girl out of the shelter and into a home of her own.

Meet Flora!❤️
Flora came to us as a local stray, and sadly, no one ever came forward to claim her. A dog should not have to spend her golden years in a shelter, and Flora deserves a soft place to land where she can enjoy all the love and comfort she has been missing. We believe Flora is a Chihuahua mix. She doesn’t seem to mind other dogs or cats, but we think she would be happiest in a quieter home without small children where she can relax and enjoy the simple things in life.
Flora had mammary tumors removed by our veterinarian and is now ready to find a family who will cherish her. She is spayed, up to date on vaccinations, dewormed, and microchipped.
Senior dogs have so much love left to give, and Flora is no exception. She deserves a warm bed, a loving family, and a home where she can spend her golden years, feeling safe and adored.

Meet Homer!🐾
Homer has been with us for 9 weeks and hasn’t received a single adoption application.💔 How is this handsome boy still being overlooked?! We believe Homer is approximately 2 years old, and he’s a typical Husky with all the personality that comes with the breed! His history is unknown, as he came to us as a stray and no one ever came forward to claim him.
Homer is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, and dewormed. He walks fabulous on a leash and does great enjoying time on his own in our play yards. Homer needs a home with no cats, older children, and with the right personality another dog in the home could work. A meet and greet would be required. Homer deserves a family of his own, a place to call home, and people who will love him for the amazing dog he is. He’s waited 9 weeks for someone to notice him. Could that someone be you? ❤️
