On November 11, 1918, at the 11th hour of the 11th month, an armistice took effect between the Allied nations and Germany, ending major fighting in World War I. in 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day to honor World War I veterans and world peace. In 1938, Congress passed an act making November 11 a legal federal holiday dedicated to world peace and World War I veterans. Following World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the 1938 act at the urging of veterans organizations, replacing "Armistice" with "Veterans" to honor U.S. veterans of all wars. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the bill into law on June 1, 1954. More than 100 years later, we continue to honor our nation's Veterans annually on November 11. Please join us as we honor our local Veterans by lining both sides of East Main Street for this year's Veteran's Day Parade, followed by a ceremony in Veterans' Memorial park on Pike Street.
