Happy Juneteenth, Freedom Day! Today, we honor and celebrate the resilience, strength, and beauty of Black communities throughout our nation's history. As a celebration of emancipation and the end of slavery, Juneteenth is a reminder to lift our voices toward justice, equality, and liberty for all people.

One of the greatest highlights of my career journey has been helping expand the CARE House CASA program’s impact in Oakland County, work recently recognized in a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan feature article ( attached below) highlighting the life-changing role CASA volunteers play in advocating for children in foster care. Being part of increasing the number of children paired with advocates from 105 to 133 reaffirmed that this is more than a career for me, it is my purpose. I do this work because every child deserves to be seen, protected, heard, and advocated for. Pursuing higher education is my way of strengthening my voice and expanding my ability to influence decisions that impact the safety, permanency, well-being, and future of children. Special thank you to Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, brand journalist Jake Newby and his team for telling this powerful story, and to CARE House of Oakland County, whom I am proud to serve under and represent every opportunity I get. Lastly, none of this work would be possible without the power of dedicated CASA volunteers, ordinary people doing extraordinary things by standing in the gap for children when they need someone most.

The statistics are hard to hear, but they are important to talk about.

In this clip from Caffeinated Conversations, Brooke sits down with Billie Ragland, Director of Community Education at CARE House of Oakland County, to talk about child abuse prevention and the growing risks children face, both in person and online.

Billie shares that when he first started at CARE House 15 years ago, the statistic often used was that 1 in 10 children would be sexually abused before turning 18. Today, that number is closer to 1 in 5 when including sexual abuse, online abuse, and sexual extortion.

CARE House works with children starting at preschool age through high school, offering prevention education in ways that are age-appropriate, approachable, and even fun, like child safety fairs that use carnival-style games to teach body safety.

These conversations are not easy, but they matter.
