The Extraordinary Student of the Year for our 2026 program year was Vasyl Kundich. Born in Ukraine, Vasyl has been studying English for the past year with his tutor, Paul Chute. His improved English allowed him to land a full-time job at a cable company where he interacts with the public on a daily basis. This job has taken him to many states, and his supervisor even has him work overtime because he is such a great employee. He and his wife love traveling in the U.S., and he hopes to gain his US citizenship. It is easy to see why this award is well deserved.

Hamid Shahraki was working at McDonald's when he enrolled in our adult ESL education program. Despite having an Iranian education as an engineer, he was unable to use it. Through this program, his English improved, and he was able to find full-time work in a plant for a global manufacturing company. Since graduating, he is completing a certificate in quality control to further advance his career.

The Madison Heights Women's Club is hosting a Bookshop Hop! This event will help to raise money for the Madison Heights Public Library and Oakland Literacy Council.
This event will offer a "passport" for you to purchase for $15. The passport will allow you to collect stickers from participating bookstores throughout August. There will be a wrap-up event, and if you've collected enough stickers, you will be entered to win a prize basket.

The Oakland Literacy Council Executive Director spoke to the Madison Heights Women's Club on August 1st.

Our staff had a productive day planning our new program year off-site, thanks to the hospitality of Kirk in the Hills, which has been such a wonderful supporter of our mission for many years!
