Volunteers doing everything we can think of to save the globally rare Atlantic Coastal Pine Barrens Ecoregion of Southeastern Massachusetts.

We believe that by providing learning opportunities for the public and building a network of conservation groups, individuals and business for greater conservation and advocacy, we will be able to turn around the escalating trend of rapidly disappearing and deteriorating Pine Barrens habitat and head the entire region towards a future of cooperative living between humankind and the natural world. We hope you will become a part of this mighty effort!

Plymouth can boast of having 50 'coastal plain ponds' (CPP) among its total of 450+ ponds.

CPP are rare natural communities notable for the 'mysterious' rise and fall of their waters, 'zonation,' for the 'rare abundance' of certain species of flowers, and their extreme vulnerability to pollutants such as road salt, fertilizers, and homeowners who don't understand how to live along their shorelines.

SEMPBA is excited to support a special presentation on these special places by MassWildlife and Mass Audubon, with a special focus for homeowners living along these ponds.

Please use the QR Code or the web address to sign up for one of two sessions to be offered on October 7. The first, from 2-4 in the Fehlow Room at the Plymouth Public Library, and the second (a Zoom-only session) that night from 6 to 8 pm.

Our journey ‘round Century Bog on Labor Day - at a fairly rapid pace - took about 3.5 hours, and was an eye opener.

In just a few months the contractor has made significant progress: removing many of the ‘opportunistic’ pitch pine that had sprung up in the bogs’ footprint once it was no longer irrigated, re-channeling the stream to follow a more natural, winding direction from where it emerges from the woods, laying the foundation for healthy upland woodlands and, grading the southeastern end to allow for a more natural shoreline for the long-abused coastal plain pond, Bartlett Pond.

We took hundreds of photographs, added a number off species to iNaturalist, and in so doing added to the chronological record of the changes happening on this property.

Please, if you have the chance, visit the site and do the same - adding to iNaturalist and to this chronicle. Just be sure your camera’s setting records the GPS location of each picture. Then send the photos and any commentary on what you saw- to me, Frank Mand, VP of the SEMASS Pine Barrens Alliance at 774-454-0856.

We’re spending part of our Labor Day, walking the perimeter of century bog, which is on the Wareham/Plymouth Line.

It is the site of an ambitious restoration project with a goal of producing an environment similar to Mass Audubon’s, Tidmarsh Wildlife Sanctuary, which restored a large cranberry farm in the heart of Plymouth.

We will be taking photographs and - using iNaturalist - recording the species of trees, shrubs, insects, and animals, to have a record of the changes that will take place over the course of the restoration.

The image attached to this post shows nine areas where we will focus our photographic and biological sampling and, if you are out for a walk in this area, we encourage you to do the same.

Our headquarters, at Center Hill, is closed for the next week or so because our pump suddenly stopped pumping this week.

Local residents with wells know the story: when the pump fails, it often must be pulled from the ground (from 50- 75- even 100 feet or more down) before the source of the problem can be determined and repairs or replacement take place.

We're sorry if this inconveniences you, or your organization. Our regularly scheduled weekly events (Monday morning yoga and PSA) will not take place.
