Uplifting the voices of those living in the Neville Island airshed since 2014. Over 50,000 residents live on and around Neville Island.

For decades, Neville Island was home to farms that exported asparagus and strawberries to some of the finest hotels and restaurants in New York City. During World War I, the federal government seized some land on Neville Island to build an am******on plant. World War II made Neville Island an industrial center as other industries moved onto the island. Today, Neville Island is home to many industrial facilities, including two chemical plants and coke works, that emit a significant portion of the total amount of air pollution in Allegheny County. Many citizens grew tired of waiting for the government to take action on these polluters. In 1996, Clean Water Action, a non-profit environmental organization, brought together residents from Brighton Heights, Bellevue, Avalon, Ben Avon, Ben Avon Heights, Emsworth, Kilbuck, Neville Township, Robinson, Kennedy, Stowe, and McKees Rocks to form the Neville Island Good Neighbor Committee.

Ten years ago, community members and partners like us helped vision and support the launch of SmellPGH, the crowdsourced smell-reporting tool developed by Carnegie Mellon University's CREATE Lab. A decade later, it's still helping Pittsburghers document the air pollution they experience every day. We're celebrating this milestone with CREATE Lab on September 30th, 4:00-7:00p.m. at Schenley Plaza, and we hope you'll join us too!

Join ROCIS for their 70th monitoring cohort! The intro webinars will take place on Sept 14 or 15, and monitoring runs from Oct 1 to Oct 30.
Once you join an LCMP cohort, you will be loaned a monitoring kit to track indoor air quality indicators such as small particles, radon, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, humidity, and temperature.
With a cohort of peers, you’ll attend virtual meetings hosted by the ROCIS team. They’ll help you interpret your data and figure out what technical interventions (such as whole-house filtration and portable air cleaners) you might benefit from. You’ll also learn about how changing certain behaviors (like covering pans while cooking or using an induction stovetop) can help reduce your exposure to pollution produced inside the home.

Lindy Paving, a facility located on Neville Island, was issued a civil penalty of $13,195 for exceeding limits for nitrogen oxides emissions during a stack test that took place on October 16, 2025. Lindy Paving failed that stack test but continued to operate through November 30, 2025, when a permit amendment authorizing higher emission rates became effective.
ACCAN is looking into this permit amendment to learn more, so connect with us to stay posted on what’s going on in your airshed!
