A big thank-you Penrose Academy for spending time at HYC yesterday! Their team helped sort and count hygiene donations and organize inventory—and they’re also gearing up for a hygiene drive and their fourth year supporting HYC youth through Holiday Magic.

We’re grateful for partners who keep finding ways to support our youth all year long. Thank you, Penrose! ✨

🎓 FAFSA season is here — but knowing where to start isn't always easy. For many young people, going to college starts with a big question: How will I pay for it? The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is an important first step in exploring financial aid, but completing the application can feel overwhelming, especially for youth experiencing homelessness.

Earlier this year, HYC Youth Coaches had the opportunity to participate in the U.S. Department of Education’s beta testing of the new 2027–28 FAFSA. The experience gave our team an early look at the application and, more importantly, another opportunity to help youth navigate the process.

📚 Read our latest blog at hycaz.org to learn more about what youth may encounter during the process and how HYC Youth Coaches help them take the next step.

What began as a volunteer opportunity at HYC for Gary and his granddaughter, Braelyn, became a tradition they’ve carried with them for years. Now, they’re joined by Emma — continuing a family tradition of showing up, serving youth experiencing homelessness, and making a difference. 💙

🍂 Fall has officially arrived, and the holidays will be here before we know it!
For many of us, the holiday season means making lists, planning gatherings, and looking forward to traditions with the people we love. For a young person experiencing homelessness, a thoughtful gift can mean something more: a reminder that someone remembered them, thought of them, and wanted to make their holiday a little brighter.

That’s why Holiday Magic Starts Now at HYC!

You can be part of that magic by sponsoring an HYC youth this holiday season. Whether you fill a holiday gift bag, donate gift cards, or make an online donation and let our team do the shopping, your generosity can help a young person feel remembered and cared for this holiday season.

Sponsorships are time-sensitive, so please sign up soon!

What can cause a young person to miss school?
For youth experiencing homelessness, the answer may have little to do with whether they want to be in the classroom.

A youth may be moving between homes, not have access transportation, going without enough food or appropriate clothing, lacking school supplies, or trying to manage the stress and uncertainty that can come with not having stable housing. These barriers can make getting to school—and staying focused once they arrive—much more difficult.

This Attendance Awareness Month, we’re highlighting an important part of the conversation: improving attendance means understanding what may be happening outside the classroom, too.

For a youth experiencing homelessness, uncertainty around housing, finances, school, transportation, and everyday needs can make it difficult to focus on what comes next.

One youth shared that HYC helped her realize she wasn’t entirely alone and gave her a community that helped her see her future from a different perspective. That kind of connection, alongside practical support, can make a difference. At HYC, we help create stability by connecting youth with resources, supportive relationships, and opportunities to stay focused on their education and future goals.
