That’s a wrap on the 2026 Graduate Student Mathematical Modeling Camp!

After an inspiring week of collaboration and skill-building, participants now head to the Mathematical Problems in Industry (MPI) Workshop at Drexel University, beginning June 14.

We’re grateful to our GSMMC co-directors and mentors for their leadership, and to the National Science Foundation (NSF) (Grant No. 2445603) for supporting this program and student participation in the MPI Workshop.

SIAM’s 2026 Graduate Student Mathematical Modeling Camp (GSMMC) is underway!

Participants convened this week at the University of Delaware for a four-day, hands-on experience tackling real-world modeling challenges and building career skills, led by co-directors Pak-Wing Fok and Eirini Kilikian.

We thank the National Science Foundation (NSF) (Grant No. 2445603) for supporting this summer program.

In SIAM News, Ernest Davis reviews Seeing Foucault’s Pendulum: Between Science, Politics, and Art by Michael Hagner, translated by Robert Savage. The book details the historical relevance of in the exploration of Earth’s rotation and provides a biography of Léon Foucault—whose pendulum installations garnered worldwide attention—before turning to the ways in which modern artists and writers have used the Foucault pendulum. https://www.siam.org/publications/siam-news/articles/the-meanings-of-foucault-s-pendulum/

Don't miss SIAM’s in-person course, “From Data to Equations: Weak Form Methods for Discovering Models from Noisy Data,” happening July 5 at the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland.

Led by instructors David Bortz (University of Colorado Boulder) and Daniel Messenger (Los Alamos National Laboratory), this one-day, in-person intensive course will explore the rapidly evolving field of weak form scientific machine learning. Participants will gain practical experience applying weak form methods to real datasets and learn how to implement these approaches in their own work.

Early registration ends June 8! Read more: https://www.siam.org/publications/siam-news/articles/from-noisy-data-to-better-models-the-case-for-weak-form-scientific-machine-learning/

How is AI reshaping mathematics?

At , Ken Ono (Axiom Math and University of Virginia) will explore how tools such as large language models and formal proof assistants are changing mathematical discovery and verification.

In his invited presentation, “Mathematics in the Age of AI: Discovery, Verification, and the Future of Proof,” Ono will examine how these approaches can support research while raising new questions about rigor, attribution, and how mathematical ideas are developed, checked, and communicated.

Join us at to hear this and other invited presentations throughout the program. Read the full abstract:

June 5 is , a reminder of how much there is still to understand about our planet and a changing climate.

During the 2019-2020 Australian wildfires, Earth-observation satellites identified peculiar smoke-swirling patterns: the rising of the smoke and the formation of rotated in a single direction. In the June issue of SIAM News, Matthew Francis details a new paper that explores the behind why these smoke vortices defied ordinary . https://www.siam.org/publications/siam-news/articles/why-does-wildfire-smoke-circulate-in-one-direction/
